I ordered an ignition switch from fellow Samba member VWtech & it showed up the other day THANKS Bob!

Then I unbolted the column & rotated it so I could install the switch, all the fasteners were missing so I'll have to source those. I was curious about the steering lock so I removed the lock mechanism.

Unfortunately the lock pin has been removed, I'll have to find one later.

But now the key will work in the ignition & should once I remove this & sort out this rat's nest.

Hi, I´m in the same mission of a old ´72 resurrection. This is very inspiring!

Although, I've been looking desperately for a new or old front beam. Do you have any tip about where to look for this part? I will appreciate it a lot!!!

Welcome to The Samba!

Try doing a search in the bay bus classified section.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php...words=Beam
It would also help to know where you're at.

Todays task was to reassemble the steering lock housing, I got the lock housing back together, & used some heat shrink on the harness to clean it up as much as possible.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

In the process of trying to install the lock mechanism & housing I discovered that the housing is the incorrect part.

It's designed to sit higher causing the column tube to sit lower & cause the steering wheel to not sit where it needs to.

Oh well, the hunt is on, I might just modify & shim it up until I can find the proper one for a reasonable price.

So I then decided to try to re-key the door handles, so I removed the drivers side.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

After lubricating it & futzing with it, I discovered that the new key actually matches the handles. YAY!

So then I cleaned the nasty repaint from around the door handle & reinstalled the handle & lubed up the lock mechanism.

What are your plans for paint once you get it all cleaned up?

I'm not quite sure yet, the original paint isn't quite nice enough to try to drive as is while doing the body repairs (too wet & humid to let it go bare metal.) so touch up will be needed at the very least.

This Crispy Pig kept me from doing anything with the Crusty Pig.

Thank you sir. And welcome to The Samba! Yes, the Crispy Pig was great, the Crusty Pig however...

I received my window seals & some other parts that I needed to get the Crusty Pig back together.

So I pulled the old gaskets out to prep the openings for the windows that I picked up from someone that was parting a Bus on Clist. The passenger side was apparently broken out with a baseball bat or the like which slightly bent the opening.

So I removed the sliding door track cover & started to clean the channel & it looks like I'll be doing some rust repair before installing the glass.

I REALLLY didn't want to do this but...
I started by straightening the window opening, first with a pair of pliers.

Then with a modified pair of Vice-Grips.

Much better.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Then it was time to start addressing the rust. First I drilled out the spot welds on the slider cover mounting flange.

Then I gently worked the flange back & forth to get to release from the body.

Thanks! I'm glad it's been interesting enough for people to follow.

Here's where I started cutting out the rotted window frame.

The weather didn't cooperate to do anything with the body so I just cleaned, blasted, & painted the sled tins.

I was just about to toss the engine back into the Crusty Pig but then I kept thinking about the fact that the fuel sender unit wouldn't be accessible once it was back in so I pulled it back out & followed this process...
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=629435

With one slight deviation to keep from melting the plastic insulator.

Since the hardware store is already closed, it might be tomorrow (if they're open.) or the next before I can get the tank & engine back in.

Nice to see these updates! Any reason for going black instead of grey on the heat exchangers?

Thank you sir!

After removing all the crud & grime, what paint was still there was black with no hint of anything under that (You can still see some of it in a couple spots.).

I thought about trying to go through archived pictures of what the engines looked like as they came off the assembly line but couldn't find anything definitive. Yes, I know that all of the replacements were grey but mine were black so that's what they went back to. It's not like this thing will ever be concourse quality.

I finally got to find a screw & nut at the local hardware store (they went on vacation through the 6th) I used a 4mm x 6mm pan head screw (since I have metric taps).
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So I reassembled the sender unit, tested it (it works now!!!), installed it in the tank, & put the tank back in.

I also installed a new in tank filter.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Tomorrow, I'll try to get the engine back in!
