I got her running!
Finally!
Thanks to all who contributed posts. They were a great help in troubleshooting.
Been sitting since 2009. Gonna try to take it for a spin around the block tomorrow, but still running rich. I know I still got more work to do.
Ecstatic right now though. Had to post.

I finished up the trunk lid. Got the mesh all epoxied in and set it back on to see what it looks like. Not too bad.

Looks awesome. Where did you find the rear luggage rack to fit a 1970? I have been wanting one for my 1972 SB but all I can find is ones that say they are for 1967 and older. |

I got the one for the 1967/older and just modified the install slightly.
The bumper brackets on the '72 are bigger than the '67 and earlier so the mounting brackets that come with the rack wont work. You can make your own and mount it that way or do what I did and drill 1 hole through the drive side bracket and thats it. it mounts right up. I used universal clevis pins instead of bolts to mount the rack itself to the car so i can take it off easily for maintenance or if there is a fire. They provide a tight fit and dont wiggle. I used washers as spacers to take up the space between the clevis pin and bracket so that it is a tight/snug fit.
Pretty straight forward. _________________ 1964 Ford Falcon Sedan

Rebuilt the carburetor over the weekend. You know, so instead of running well, it'll run great. It was indeed rather cruddy, and both the choke and accelerator pump diaphragms were on their last legs. Naturally...it won't start now. Didn't have time to dink around with it, but I imagine it's something simple.
Update: It was the automatic choke. Checked it cold when I got back home, it wasn't even coming close to closing the choke plate. I had been having some starting issues, that's why I rebuilt the carb in the first place. Idle doesn't slow down now, looks like the replacement element I put in is too tight on the factory settings. I can step it down manually to a normal idle, so I just have to readjust it.
Update 2: Repositioned the choke element to about 1/4 turn clockwise from the factory marks, the connector blade now points down, vs. to the front of the car. Car "cold". Loosened the clamp, held the throttle open, and rotated the element clockwise until the choke butterfly valve was loose, then rotated it back counterclockwise until the valve just snapped closed, tightened up the clamp, problem solved. Only a day and a half into the "fix", but the car now starts almost instantly. Time will tell.

A week ago I replaced the defroster tubes on the driver's side deep dark hole. There is definitely an order to that job--first being scratch up your hand, arm then test your patience. Now I have lovely stinky heat again! =)
Since I drove around without tubes while I waited for the parts it occured to me that some may be experiencing gas smell in the cab because of bad or ill fitting heater tubes, letting the smell in, on top of whatever venting issues a gas tank under the hood can cause. |

I picked my 74 beetle up from the mechanic today. Super excited to be able to drive it again! It's been 4-5 years. |

The rear left tire had gone flat during the day while at work today. I used the factory jack for the 1st time ever to change the tire, and I've owned 6 Bugs over the years! Worked pretty well and was easy to use.

Removed the aftermarket mirror that the PO installed to modify it for a modern courtesy light upgrade.
