I am trying to figure out what kind of threads my dune buggy transmission shifter has on it. Not having much luck, all I knows that in order to shift into Reverse you have to lift up on the threads which lift up a cable and then shift into Reverse. The threads are cones shaped, being smaller on the top and wider on the bottom. I'm just trying to figure it out so I can but shifter knob as it's uncomfortable on my hand without one.

If you check out some of these knobs, it looks like they fit multiple threads somehow... maybe call Appletree and ask how that works... or get some pictures of what you're describing?

I will work on getting one in the next couple days, currently headed out of town for the weekend. But I may be able to get one a little later. I'll post it when I get it.

This is what the shifter knob threads look like. It's the style where you jave to lift up and it lifts a cable which moves the reverse lockout and allows you to put it into Reverse.

Wild guess never having taken the handle off one, but maybe an EMPI or Bugpack 10".

(the push button actually lifts the action internally)

If so, best just to replace it...

Got pics of the mount and a full shot of the boot?

If it were a Scat, you'd know straight away (aside from the name stamped on the shaft). Wink

http://vwparts.aircooled.net/SCAT-Drag-Fast-Shifter-Straight-1968-Beetle-p/80500.htm

Edit:

And the Bergs have a round shaft.

And https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=219853

Edit:

Going by what I see of the boot and shaft, I have to keep leaning towards my first response. Of course, boots can be swapped but the squared hole seems to be the correct match for the shifter.

Just a wild guess, but it doesn't look threaded to me the groves look like they were cut parallel

Bugpak or "generic" copy...

Have Bugpak one in my buggy now...

Yours has "T" handle and thumb button for reverse lock out missing.. Threaded section that you lift on for reverse is somebodies "kludge" (not part of original shifter) so it will shift..... IF it were me, I would just replace it...

Thanks everybody for the replies, I think I'm going to just buy a new one, all I should have to do is take the 2 bolts out and swap the new in correct? I'd assume no fabricating needed, or hopefully not atleast.
Anybody recommend a different shifter or is this one a pretty nice one?

Also does anybody know what all I have to do to get this pedal working in my sand rail?
https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00EDON4NE/ref=yo_ii_img?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This is the pedal assembly I currently have, I just want to replace the gas pedal, already bought the one mentioned above because it was a really good price. Now I realize I have no idea how to make it work with my current setup.

That pedal in the link would be difficult to make work with a factory pedal. It would normally be used with a aftermarket clutch /brake pedal assy, ie cnc or jamar ect.

Is there a pedal like the one I've already bought that would fit in the assembly I have? I dislike the throttle pedal immensely.

And yes, the shifter just slips in and bolts down,

I'm actually a fan of the EMPI/Bugpack T handle (put them into five sand rails and have one coming for my current desert rail restoration project). I've always found them nice and smooth, tight, and with a short throw pattern. Honestly, pretty pleasant to operate. And inexpensive.

Highly suggest going ahead and replacing the linkage bushing and clip while you're at it:

Why so animate about changing it. Drive it now, change it if you still want to over the winter. With a little ingenuity and google searching you can modify it for less than $5 that will take the flop out of it. The CNC and Jamar pedal kits will run you $250 - $350

The roller pedal works just fine for many rails. Even most full kit aftermarket one have a similar setup

You could replace with an unmodified stock one like this.

I dislike the roller pedal, I prefer a flat pedal. That's why I'm looking to change it, made a mistake and bought one before really looking at the pedals and realized to late that it wouldn't work. So now I'm hoping somebody on here knows of one similar to the one I bought that'll work in my setup or how to make the one I bought work.

I have posted the ones that will work with the pedal you bought, or how to go back to the stock VW pedal. https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/613222.jpg

Unfortunately your pedal assembly has been modified like most found in rails so the mounting tabs for the stock flat petal have been cut off. If you want to keep your existing pedal assembly in the buggy you will need to fabricate a hinge point to add the pedal back. Here ( https://www.appletreeauto.com/ACCELERATOR-PEDAL-REPAIR-KIT/ ) is the stock petal and roller wheel. Measure and make a hinge point on your floor to convert back.

Or one of these ( https://www.appletreeauto.com/GAS-PEDAL-KIT/ ) or ( https://www.appletreeauto.com/BILLET-CRUIZER-PEDAL-BLACK/ ) might bolt in through the mounting bolt to actuate the roller wheel. If you have room mount the one you have to push against the roller wheel, essentially like the factory one did.

So it looks like that one that is factory, if you take off the wheel from the assembly I have now, will work if I mount a pivot point like you said to?

Bolt flat pedal to floor and let work against roller pedal...
