Neil, which bearing are you concerned about? Both of them need to be installed so that they align with their own oiling hole. The one at the flywheel end also has a little groove machined in it which also should be aligned to squirt oil at the gears of the shaft and vac-pump (diesel) or distributor (gas). Both holes are through holes - neither is blind.

Oops. Pardon me.

Was referring to the bearing at vac-pump end. Re: the OP's engine, I wondered that IF that bearing was installed so it too close to the pulley end, (was not seated far enough toward flywheel end of block), that would cause the outboard bearing at pulley end to sit a little too far out thus adversely affect oiling at that outboard bearing (?)

I ask because in my case, the machine shop I used told me that the first attempt to install the flywheel end IM shaft bearing failed; they installed a 2nd new bearing. IOW its something even an experienced shop could screw up.

I was more attuned to oiling for that outboard bearing after reading a thread of yours' Question regarding oiling and position of the outboard bearing and possible modifications to that bearing or part of block where it seats. A distant memory....

Neil.
