Getting a little warm these days and the stock fan doesn't exactly move a lot of air to the driver's benefit. At speed, the fresh air vent is nice but here in the Big Smoke, speed is not always happening. So what do you use for an additional fan to keep yourself cool? 12V? USB? Bring it… _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

I'm using an oscillating fan mounted semi-permanently just forward of the skylight (i.e. blowing forward on the driver & front seat passenger).

It helps the (rear) AC reach the front in hot 100° driving.
I tried some sort of 'turbo' fan (sort of tube-shaped) but it was too noisy. This cheapo fan is very quiet yet effective. |

Similar style. Great at stop lights when you do not have a/c. May swap for two speed version someday.

^^^ Identical fan to mine, but mine is mounted to the lid of the dash ashtray.
My original ashtray was pristine, so I paid a few bucks for one with a broken
corner. If I ever want to go back to stock, I'm ready...
Since I've resurrected my A/C I use the dash fan more by swiveling it to the side
to blow the cool air to the left side of the dash which then gets funnelled forward
to my (otherwise warm, usually in the sun) left side. Looks dorky, but I like it...

I like the "O2 Cool" D battery type fans and Ryobi hybrid fans (120V + rechargeable 18V) because I prefer to utilize all of my aux battery reserves for more important uses like food and beer (aka ARB fridge)! These fans make a huge difference, especially while sleeping. _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

I pretty much did the same thing as you did Dave. I bought one of those oscillating fans....got a spare ashtray....cut out a square slot in the top of it.... took the base of the fan off.... filled the ashtray with Bondo and placed the base of the fan through the square slot in the top of the ashtray.... the Bondo set up real quick like.... when I need a bit of cool air, I just plug it into the lighter..... when I don't need it I just lift out the whole thing and put the original ashtray back in. |
