Glad to see you got your van back! I've been following this story and I was pleasantly surprised to see that it has been found (and was relatively unscathed.)
It's a shame that occasionally we can fall susceptible to predators but this thread is evidence that humans are inherently good. It just so happens that humans who belong to the Samba community seem to be inherently Awesome! Nice work to all who contributed.
I love a story with a happy ending. |

Oh, this is no coincidence. People who buy these buses are a big part of why we did.
And we have Germans to thank for all this. I do it personally all the time, generally just before dissing their beer. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

with all the thefts you guys seem to have I would be looking into a removable steering wheel.
a kill switch down stream may work....but a power to the 15 feed on the coil will back feed the system and other than starter operation, it will run.
wish I had a Vanagon here....an A shaped device that locked the pedals from being pressed and tied into a steering wheel removal hub would lock her down good.....
or just buy a boot and clamp it to your wheel https://universalboot.com/
I think the boot may keep any asshole crack head at bay, as they may think the van is being watched by the police
or just remove the rotor....that would get old I suppose.... |
I thought about the steering wheel, but it would be pretty easy to clamp vice grips on the stub and steer, I'd think. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Thanks Dave, you're a good fella.
I do appreciate the kind words.
Because of the weird circumstances I decided to do something unusual for me; let a shop fix it.
I didn't really examine it too closely to see all it's needs, like maybe a lock cylinder, but I think it just needs the wiring re-conected, and the steering dropping out of the pins is likely just from them beating on the wheel.
So, hopefully it's just labor.
Thanks for the offer of parts but I think the guy's at Wolf repair have probably got it covered.
Except for the wing window.
Wolf initially thought he had a spare but yesterday he said he can't find it.
I'm having a tough time finding a replacement for the passenger wing window, though there's one last guy on the samba classifieds that I'm waiting to hear back from.
I'm waiting for Monday to hear from Mr. Wolf on the update. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

So, interesting thing about the pedal lock.
In trying to get that off of there they bent the arm down so that I couldn't release it with a key.
BUT, I removed it in less than 2 minutes
If you look closely at this pic you'll see that I'm just holding it up there for the pic, to show where it was, but the bottom bar that captures it to the brake is above the brake arm.
If you want to know how I took it off pm me, I don't really want to publicize it.

It's a bus kinda thing, Duuuuude!
And now a 37-year client friend wants to produce a bus travel show about us all on YouTube. I have a feeling I can find interesting people to play along...
Congrats again, Levi. See ya soon, sometime or 'nother. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

I put it on correctly.
They could not get it off of there.

It is beatable, they just didnt figure it out. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Another piece comes together, this one a wing to replace the broken passenger side window, with Andrew's decal on it, so a definite upgrade.
Thanks Andrew!
Yes a little remnant on the seal from the duct tape I had on there.
