You sure you guys aren't using some of Reagan's voodoo economics math when calculating those gas mileage figures. Some of the numbers put forth are way out of line with the original MPG ratings that VW posted.

I sure my figures are accurate...enough. Notice how I strive to not exceed 3400 rpms?
The last time we came back from the gulf coast, driving the 500 miles back at 80+mph, I was getting maybe 17mpg with a FULL load (all interior).
No magic involved. If I drive like everyone else on the road I.E like an A-hole, my mileage would suck, van would be beat to hell if not wrecked.
I drive my vans defensively, like I want them to last forever. |

While restoring a WBX6 I drove the 91 Vanagon for almost 5k miles. The best I got was 18mpg, worst was 15. Most of the time it was about 16-17mpg.

I'm now running a 4-speed Syncro with an AAZ TD (1.9), 215/70R15.
My GPS tells me I average 11.8 liters/ 100km (19.93MPG).
Van weighs in at two ton. _________________ 1990 Feldjäger Syncro AAZ

I bet there's a big difference for those of us who live in mountains vs. flatlanders. Just my opinion. I have to floor the accelerator pedal way more than I want to because of hills. When I head to the coast, easy cruizing.
I'm getting around 18 according to last full-up, which I'm mighty happy with. Included 210 mile round trip from Asheville area>Fontana Village, which is quite...hilly. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. Finally got my odometer fixed (VC rocks) and have recorded my last two tanks...
first tank: 14.9mpg
second: 14.9 mpg
WBX, unsure of weight. Daily commute to work (9mi, mix of stop lights and open highway). Cargo box on roof.
Wish it were 18....

Seeing as how my post was quoted, I can't help but think you are implying something. Am I mistaken? |

1987 Vanagon Weekender Pop-top
2.1 engine
auto tranny
stock
Hankook RA08 14's
-van essentially empty except for maybe 25-50lbs of tools/stuff
-NOT running my AC
-regular unleaded
14.5 mpg around town
17-19 mpg on longer interstate trips running 60-65 mph (high wind can knock me down to 15-16 mpg running 55-60 mph)
Thanks,

Last four fillings:
21.5
22.6
22.7
22.6
The last fillup I noticed extra exhaust noise. Rotted the test port cap off. Half a tank before I could fix.
Shooting for 23mpg. It's been 3+ years since I hit that figure. |

I get 20-21mpg regularly and once got 24 on my last trip. I use 91 octane seems to give better mpg but the crappy winter gas with ethanol gives bad mpg, I once got 16 mpg driving across sw kansas where they must really love their ethanol, thought I had a fuel leak.
I drive my 1987 4 spd stock 2.1 wbx loaded Westy slow, usually 65 mph or less if going up a mountain pass, I try not to use full throttle for long but sometimes get her up to 70 mph. I have non-stock 15 inch rims with Nokian eNTYRE 205/70 R 15 100 T XL tires inflated to 38/40 ft/rr. I'm almost always above 5000ft altitude. |

Forgot to reset trip...so let it run for two tanks and registered
22.8
Then this last tank I had to make a 180m round trip to get some lanterns and a couple stoves I didn't need, and kept it at 55mph. Finished the tank with general around town driving.
Got 23.8 mpg
'bout time |

86 stock 2.1 all tuned up. Just got 20.6 driving the double nickel. IMO fuel mileage is an extremely good indicator of how well your engine is performing.
I check it regularly and if it goes off, something is up. |

Just got back from a ~400mi trip. Overall mileage: 28.5. That's normal for us when it's a mixed interstate and highway trip. _________________ I'm Joe
