Is there a particular brake shoe/lining best recommended for the 411? |

I have not heard of anything particular about the shoes (others will chime in)...just that if you have manual adjust rear brakes they are easy to find (same as late type3) but for auto adjust rear brakes (which was optional) I have not been able to find any new shoes.

If you drive the car alot.....and drive it hard.....especially lots of stop and go.....you will find yourself adjusting the rear brakes a lot. Usually they need about t mins work anx a click or two every month when I was driving daily.
Eventually a brake guru ai knew suggested and sold to me a set of Mintex rear shoes. I dont know the friction code or part #. It is somewhere in my bag of receipts. I will see if I can f8nd them. They had lots of visible metal in them. Best shoes ai have ever had

I'm shopping for rear brake shoes, and notice different letter designations on the end of the part numbers. I just saw a set of new shoes on the type 3 forum with part number vw-311-609-537G. What does the G stand for? I see the letter E on most part numbers. Bob |

That is a revision code. The main part # is 311 609 537. If you pull the part up by just the number....it will always identify a brake shoe. The letter code is added as something is changed over the years.
It can be as drastic as it fits one year and not another....or a simple as only changing a thickness of material, friction code or method of construction.....but otherwise fit was not changes.
Let me look in the bokk this morning and see if there are prefix number versions.
Some of the letter codes back in the day....denoted shoes of thicker material to use on drums that had been "turned" on a lathe but were still in spec. Ray |

I would say....whats in the parts book for rear brake show part #'s... while not much help...is certainly interesting.
It lists two part #'s:
411 609 537 S This is the part # for the normal shoe set
411 609 537 A This is the part # for the M-86 variation which is for self adjusting brakes listed for Sweden market.
Under brake shoe lining material by itself....it lists two #'s
311 698 093 A - normal replacement lining with rivets
311 698 096 A - replacement linings that are 0.5mm oversized.
There is no telling from what information I have...what all of the minor variations in letter code are.
While digging around...I did find an interesting E-bay auction. This guy has tons of NOS brake linings laying around. These in the picture are for a bus....http://www.ebay.com/itm/371979272644?vectorid=229466&item=371979272644&rmvSB=true
His other auctions...while not useful...are certainly spectacular. This is worth looking at just to marvel at the goodies!

His main store http://stores.ebay.com/worldofaccessoriesenterhere?_trksid=p2047675.l2563
Sorry to get off subject...but I just ran across the site while searching for brake shoe info...and it was quite drool-worthy!
