Really? That sure seems way high to me. Especially not knowing the quality of the parts and machining.
I'm looking for a block I can learn to rebuild myself, but they're tough to find. I can rebuild the one that's in there now, but it runs too well and the compression numbers are too good to think about ripping it apart. _________________ -Kent-

I think if it was a rebuilt FI 2.0 with all the hard to find parts it would be worth it. In the ad it doesn't really say rebuilt anywhere though |

Yeah, part of the reason it was so expensive was because I needed to buy certain tools and I made mistakes. Plus replacing broken exhaust bits, tin, FI components, etc.
I could probably rebuild another one for $2-$3k in parts and machining plus the core. I agree with consvws, if it was a quality rebuild with the FI components then $4500 without a core is a good deal |

How can you tell from here if the bus was made in 1967 not 68?
|
One way that you can tell that it's an early production 1968 is in the picture of the engine bay. You can see the gas tank & retainer strap, later 1968s had the divider panel/firewall. |
M-plate decoder will tell the DAY of build. But a quick check of the VIN will give you some idea. Usually built about 300,000 per year. that's 25k/ month. August was not a full month, but even counting serially by 25k's gives a basic idea. 2 or 3 zeros, in position 6,5,4 from the right will get an early car.
For instance, I have an 80 Vanagon Westy, built JULY 1979, VIN 008223. It is the 3rd oldest KNOWN Vanagon Westy in the US. Until more pop up. Not all that low a number, but maybe the first ones did not head to the Camperworx immediately?
A registry would be good.

When I kick the bucket, remind my heirs to not have these guys do the auction..
There might be $15000 total worth of value there, but not to any one person. And how could those bidders possibly get stoked enough to bid it up with that poor presentation.
I'll wait till somebody else hauls away the mopeds and old Hondas and makes a good presentation of what's for sale.

Just sounds like someone is tired of dealing with people. People suck. Im sure if no one steps up and buys the lot, this guy will part it out and deal with the cat herding BS that goes with it. _________________

Im curious why a guy so clearly proud of his bus obviously beat the shit out of it since 1997? Accident? Accidents? Or just plain shit caretaker? _________________

well, at least you warned him. most of us haven't put our bats away yet.
this pisses me off....I would (and have) donated to people who have fallen on hard times....death, fire, etc etc but to try and fund a project you can't afford and have zero business owning....I resent that
furthermore, I would donate to an active member doing something good for a charity or what have you. to join and try to hustle $$ is disreputable....and yes, I agree the "fund my lifestyle" crowd seems to have brought the beggars out of the woodwork _________________

What a bunch of bullshit artists. Maybe 10% are viable. Go fund me makes it difficult to look at all of them. Makes you start at the front of the queue every time. I do sometimes feel generous.
Oh well.
