Good choice on the headliner.... |
I agree thanks. I haven't decided if I'm going to try to put it in yet. There is a shop locally that has done a lot of early Porsche and VW stuff, along with high end cars and street rods. If that doesn't pan out for some reason I might do it myself. I could probably do it just as nice or better than a shop that has never done one of these. _________________ Check out my truck brought back from the dead... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=420762&highlight=sprayed+blood

Moving along back to bodywork.... I was looking more at my modified "vert" decklid, and I just wasn't happy with it. I have to remind myself that the car is getting painted black and I want the body panels to look perfect. The decklid had just too many tears and rewelds at the hinges and spring bracket to meet my standards. A total of 6 rewelds already.
I was looking at other options to give the upper supercharger pulley more clearance behind the license plate light and still needed extra vents for the extra heat. The 58-63 vert rain tray is very bulky and wasn't going to fit. The W decklid rain trays are very small, so maybe I can get those to clear, even if I have to modify them. So, I went with a repro KSR W decklid. While not everybody's taste for a square window, I like the look of vertical vents better.
This decklid solves some problems for me, but does have one major flaw- the shape is different and there is a big gap under the back window sheet metal...

I removed the top section from my old decklid, which was easy since half of the spot welds were broken. The bottom of the decklid can be used to save another that is rusty.
My intitial plan was to (hopefully) be able to section the W and just drop in the repair piece and spot weld like original. This was not going to happen, too many different shapes involved. _________________ Check out my truck brought back from the dead... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=420762&highlight=sprayed+blood

I'm going to reuse the grey canvas I have on the car already. It's about 14 years old, but only showing minor wear and the car has been garaged for most of the time. The advantage of using it again is that it has already shrunk/grown into its final shape so the fit is nice. Several pages back you will see that I had to slot the holes on the roof to give more adjustment. I wouldn't want to have to do that again after installing the headliner. _________________ Check out my truck brought back from the dead... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=420762&highlight=sprayed+blood

Pulled the fenders off to finish welding the front apron and straighten the lip behind the lower hinge. Noticed these pinholes so I decided to just cut it open to see how bad it was. It really wasn't very corroded, so it was patched. I could only poke through with a pick a few times. With the fender out of the way it was pretty easy to straighten to folded lip. _________________ Check out my truck brought back from the dead... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=420762&highlight=sprayed+blood

I've been working on door gaps, as all the other ones are pretty good now. I tried the factory way to fix a bigger gap at the top of the door. It didn't really change anything.
From the technical section:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/looklisten_9/page3.jpg
I added nylon washers under the rear body pad and re torqued all the bolts. I've done the other tricks, wedging paint sticks in the upper hinge, whacking the hinges with a wooden block, etc. This door always had the worst gaps, even with this new door. I'm going to have to take some measurements of the door opening. The driver side door has brand new hinges, and with little effort I was able to get the factory .16" gap on all 3 sides. _________________ Check out my truck brought back from the dead... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=420762&highlight=sprayed+blood

The hinge needs closer inspection. Bowed front half or pulled away from door on back half of hinge.
