My 1957 Kombi has a fan shroud with the M code 178 stamped on it. On the factory floor in 1957 it designated the engine as a special order item. When I first received the fan shroud it looked like this:
Now after years of use and periodic cleaning the stamp is wearing out and I would like to replace it with something as close to original as possible.
I am assuming that the original marking method was a rubber stamp but don't know for sure. Any suggestions on how to get a stamp made? There are stamps on the back of the shroud, front and both sides.

That's a good question. My 1959 ambulance had them, but after one good engine wash, they were gone _________________ -Thom

I don't think the markings were ever intended to last past the factory floor but since the stamps are still there...
I've been carefull when engine cleaning to stay away from the stamp for upwards of ten years now. _________________ Roads Scholar &

Its been 10+ years since I've had a rubber stamp made but at one time any office supply store could do it, you supply the camera ready graphics and wait a week for it to arrive, surely somebody still makes stamps.
Another option would be the thin dense foam sheet from the $ store or a craft supply store and cut your own, then glue it to a wood block. I don't know how long it would last once you wet it with paint but it would likely hold together for a few stampings. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

We could get these made at the office supply shop, they send to a stamp 'carver', which we could also go direct.
If you can manage to get a 1:1 photocopy or picture of the stamp, they could make one out for you. |

You know that pic says 178, right?
VW service literature I've read says that the M157 was either automatic stick shift or/and exhaust emission control. Some show the 0 degrees BTDC moved to 7.5 degrees BTDC on those engines. Don't know if the stamp correlates. I doubt any 1957 engine was 0 degrees so maybe no correlation.
Looks rubber stamped to me. |

Barryl, he's probably used to typing 1957 or 57.
But yeah that's M178, either way, a 1:1 copy of it and look for the rubber stamp makers. Where I am some government offices use the really huge rubber stamp size similar to 4R photopaper to stamp documents. |

I've been looking at too many fan shrouds lately. Thanks for the correction. M157 is actually pretty common. _________________ Roads Scholar &

Have you thought about carving one out of a potato and dipping it in paint?

Why yes, yes I have, many times in fact, it's always been the first thing I thought of.
But the sheet foam allows you to make the letters in thier positive orientation so you can "get them just right" before making a mess, scanning them and cleaning them up with a graphics program offers camera ready art that most shops can use in case you aren't feeling at all "crafty" and want to have a stamp made. Myself I enjoy the challenge and usually make multiple versions before I create one that's actually worthy of touching the finished product, other less crafty/more technical types may choose the made for you stamp route. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
