Another question. Some of the metal clips I removed had what looked like a small, squished, o-ring under them. Is that from VW?

Wonder if you need the o rings with plastic clip? I asked but no reply yet. Maybe you could call one of the retailers we trust or the vendor itself.
Do your metal ones look like these? They have a raised area in the center perfect for an o rig.

Gary, my buddy says no O rings with the plastic clip. Coincidentally he's a former airplane mechanic (Airforce) like yourself.

Just dropped the bus at the paint shop. Makes me nervous leaving it there. Crossing fingers.

Nothing to worry about. I'm sure they know how to find reverse and know not to move it around using tie rods

Update:
I've gotten my bus back from the paint shop and installed the belt line trim. The plastic clips were fine. I used small sheet metal screws (stainless). It was $60 to buy the clips which require 51 total so that's three sets of twenty.
