You can't tell in that picture but I had to bent it so that it went down and under the rear line at the master cylinder. It looks like it bends laterally but it's not. |
That should be ok. I'd look for the brake plate that goes under the Master cylinder (in the 2 M6 screws) and make sure your lines clear it. |
I have that protective cover in a box somewhere in my basement. Once I finish organizing everything I'll throw that on and make sure that it clears, if not I can bend the line to make it work. That Cupro Nickel line is amazing, I didn't have to use a line bender once! _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

Might be worth it to get one now before you fill up the system.
Good thing you just took one of these cars apart.

I'm sooo glad that I disassembled my car beforehand. Now when I'm going through all the boxes of parts I'm like "I know that that is. This goes with this part". I'm going to check ISP for that grommet but before I order it I'm going to see if it's in one of the thousands of boxes that I'm going through in my basement. The good thing is that the interior bits from my original Fasty are in mint shape (window cranks, knobs, that mint Blaupunkt radio, etc). I'm stoked to get this going. I'll get the engine together this summer. _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

Funny, I just did this as well. I had the original single circuit line to go by, and it did closely follow the contour of the chassis as bobnotch has said. The end by the MC was obviously different, but I bent mine using the original as a guide.
Also, you might want to check your master cylinder to see if the brake switch port is on the left or right (switch ports have larger holes in the bottom). I recall there are two types of master cylinders, some are like yours, with a switch on each side, and some are like mine with the two switches on the Driver's side. I had to move my line around to accommodate.

There's nothing special about the grommet - it's a $3 part at most - but it's not one that you can slit and install because it won't stay in place. The older cars used a common grommet (same as the headlight bucket, IIRC). |

I'll just disconnect the fitting and slide it over the line and into the hole, no biggie. _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

I started unpacking and organizing parts into specific boxes and I found a bag that contained the rubber grommets at the rear of the pan. So that's good news! I also came across two different sets of tail lamp lenses (red and bi-coloured) I believe the red is correct for the car. Didn't later model T3 fastbacks come with orange and red?

I'm back. I've been working on the car quite a bit, I haven't even been lurking on here so I need to catch up on everyone's builds. Anyhow I'll keep it short and post some pictures since I'm going to go back into the cave and work on the engine.
Without further ado

I just put it together. The cover is now on the oil pump and all four pistons / cylinders are installed. I'm going to finish installing the rocker arm assembly and put the heads on etc next. Pics to follow soon. _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

So I think i'm screwed. I have three repair manuals and the one that I was following explicitly may have mislead me due to shitty illustrations. I set the crank and cam timing as per the book "how to rebuild your volkswagen engine" with the single dot on the cam gear between the two dots on the cam drive gear and it straddles the case parting line.
The distributor was set as per the book then when I get the case together and the pistons on it didn't look like piston #1 is at TDC but rather even with piston #2. I found this very odd. It didn't make sense to me as it's impossible to mix up the pistons.
So I rotate the crank so that it's on the compression stroke at TDC and now key way is 90 degrees from parting line and rotor was pointing at the mark in the dizzy. The problem is that when the fan shroud is installed the mark is moved forward throwing ignition timing out the window. I looked at my book and found that the slot for the dizzy was supposed to be 60deg from the parting line. Why the F#$K wasn't that made clear before I mated the ##@ case ? This is a bonehead move by me I believe. I've read all of my manuals and somehow missed that part, I should've known that it wasn't in chronological order just like how the camshaft seal wasn't illustrated.
I don't see any other option other than to rip he damn case apart and start over. F-me. Welcome to the school of hard knocks sucker! I'll do this next week I'm too pissed to even look at it right now. The good news is that my body will be arriving tomorrow so I can poke around on that and see what needs to be done.
I'm done ranting and kicking myself. for now. _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

I'm a little unclear as to some of what you're saying, so let me ask --
You got the dot on the cam gear between the two dots on the crankshaft gear, yes?
If so, don't worry if the distributor drive gear isn't lined up right. You can pull it out and reset it with a distributor drive puller tool.
As long as those two gears are meshed correctly, you're ok.
I'm unclear about the fan shroud part. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Yes the camshaft and crank are timed correctly it's the distributor that's out. I'll order a puller Monday. Thanks for the help, I can't believe I missed that important detail.
The vacuum advance can was in the way of the shroud I had to rotate the dizzy to install the shroud. I'll snap a picture tomorrow. _________________ 66 sunroof Fastback http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=590530

Yup, that's why they make them. I used to have one, until I loaned it to Tom back in 2008. Still haven't gotten it back from him either. Last 1 I removed, I used a wooden clutch alignment tool, and drove it into the center of the distributor drive. It came out fairly easy. But, you must make sure both dist drive shims come out with it (you did grease them when you installed them right?). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Sometimes the shims stay stuck on the case. But Bob is right, you want to make sure they don't fall down into the engine, hence the grease. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Thanks for the advice guys. I did use white grease on the shins. My friend came by today and helped me out. He used a magnet and pulled the drive out and we reset the ignition timing. Crisis averted. He also brought the body over finally!
More pics to come. There's some surface rust from it sitting in the elements under a tarp but it's structurally sound otherwise.

Here are some more shots of the body that I received. I snapped some shots of some areas that need attention and some that don't.
