Greetings,

I have dual weber idf40's on my 1915cc engine. Things were great until I needed to change plugs. I quickly discovered that the dual carbs are well beyond my expertise and I can't even access the #1 spark plug. I am thinking about replacing them with a progressive.

any thoughts? I know the dual webers are great, but I feel helpless with carbs that I can't work on and can't get around. It's tough enough to work in the engine compartment as it is.

Thoughts? (and be nice)

John

Keep the duals. There is a Weber carb book, get it. There are some that like the progressive, many others not. Not sure why you can't get to the #1. With a ratchet, universal joint and an extension (there are various lengths) you should be able to get it.

I think you would be better off staying with what you have and taking the time to learn what you need to know to get them right. Paying someone who knows what they are doing to set them up properly is well worth the money if the carbs are otherwise in good condition. The single Weber might seem like a simpler solution, but often requires quite a lot of dicking around before you are happy with it, depending on your expectations. I don't think you would save yourself any work either as you would still have a lot of setting up to do and possibly inferior performance to your current setup.

The Weber Progressive is a DOG... you'll be sorry. They run poorly when cold (no heat riser) and they lack the performance of the dual IDFs.

Buy some tools, there's plenty of room to access the plugs in a Bus.

If I can do it in a Beetle, you should have no problem.

Indeed, more room in the bus engine compartment than the bug, it's challenging, but far from impossible, that #1 is a bit of a dig to get at even with a stock carb.
How much time do you plan on spending messing with plugs?, even on my daily driver bus it's only something that needs a peek every couple years.

As mentioned the Progressive is the worst possible option, even a single centermount IDF would be a better choice if you can find a manifold that heats well and will idle on all 4 cylinders, clearance to the engine compartment roof gets tight though so you are limited to crappy air filters and short stacks.

I got a weber progressive with full setup and very little miles on that I'll be willing to trade you those duals for, PM me if interested.
Mine runs fine on my bus and PO installed it but I'm looking to change to duals.
