I just received my 15 X 8 rims from www.dunewagon.com, and I couldn`t be happier with them. They take an OG VW center and weld it into a brand new rim (width of your choosing), install new hub cap clips and powder coat them. at $209.95 a piece these 8 inchers were a steal. The quality is outstanding and the rims are straight and true.
I considered trying it myself but after seeing the finished product i`m glad i left it to the pros. just bolt on and go! I recommend these rims to anyone wanting a widened vw smoothie!
here's a pic

I'm probably going to try doing this sometime soon for my off road buggy. I have some 6" wide smoothies made by welding in bug center sections into an aftermarket steel rim. I would like to bring the back spacing down to something like 2.5" -3" because right now they have about 4.75" of back spacing. At the current backspacing the tire inner side wall is aweful close to scuffing on the spring plate.
Can't be that hard, right? Cut the welds, grind it smooth, and slide the center back and re-weld? Any diy jigs to make sure runout isn't excessive? What's an acceptable amount of runout?

A jig is easy. Clamp a spindle in your biggest vice pointing straight up, and mount a drum to it. Bolt up your wheel, and measure down to the bench top, assuming your vice is mounted to a workbench. You can improvise any sort of pointer to show you the wheel edge and indicate run out. Tack the hoop to the center in 8 places quickly without removing the wheel, and check that it's true one more time before taking it off to do the final welds. I've made several sets, this is what I've come up with.. _________________ modok wrote:

Thanks for the response. I'll give it a go one of these upcoming weekends. I would think getting runout more accurate than stock wouldn't be so hard. I have seen stock smoothies with 1/8" runout on them. I can't imagine it would be very hard to get half that. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

I've used a dial indicator with a roller tip, but it's kind of a pain in the ass. Making small adjustments to the runout, like less than 1/16th takes a real light touch, use a leather mallet or dead blow hammer. Use a sharpie or machine blue on the inside of the hoop, and use a scribe to scratch a mark where the edge of the center meets the hoop before you tap the hoop to move it. This way you can see exactly how far it moves. _________________ modok wrote:
