Took a look at the side by side comparison of this late Vanagon transmission next to my bug transmission...pretty obvious that fitting it in the frame horns will be a trick. Hopefully cutting some of the casting bosses up front on the transmission case will free up some space. Cutting off the shift tube hanger bracket boss will free up a solid inch of space on the passengers side. Cutting the bosses for fixtuing will get me another half inch or so. It will be tight. Might need to trim the inside of the frame horns slightly, but we will see where this gets us. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Got back to the project this week. More shift linkage progress. I got the ball socket welded up to the shaft. I didn't have any thick metal on hand to make it from, so I just used 1/8" welded into an I-beam shape to get the stiffness I was after.
Ball stud got the boot sealed on...
Also, might be changing plans on the back end and going to short torsion bars. Reason being I scored a pair of 9.00-15 Baja Pro tires. Long torsion bars won't quite fit. This Dutch guy couldn't pass up a good deal on tires that never kissed the ground.

If you sell me your tires, you can then use the long torsion bars. We all win! _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

Your close by, I may think about it depending on what I decide to do about spring plates/torsion bars etc. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

It's official, I'm going with 21-3/4" swing axle torsion bars. I put out a wanted in my local VW club, and an hour later I was on my way to pick them up along with new outer spring plate bushings. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Nice to hear from you again Mike! Hope life up north is treating you well. By the way, you probably will beat me to it because you have more free time than i do to putz around on it. Haha. I'm planning on having it ready for a shake down this fall. I would love to take it to the UP for some good loving abuse. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Glad to hear it Mike. I'll be tied up for the next couple weeks unable to do much. Broke my scapula today after taking a ~14' tumble, but feeling alright for the most part...must be the morphine. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Thanks man. Went to see a specialist. Sound like I won't be able to move it for two weeks, then for the following month I'll have to gradually add some motion as it heals, but won't be able to lift any load for possibly up to two months. Having a good attitude about it though. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Practicing for your Halloween gig? Superman?
Get well soon.
My wife has a device with 4 electrodes to stick on her shoulder since her rotator cuff and deltoid to spine shoulder injury. Helps with pain and with muscle repair a lot. Seriously reduced her need for drugs. She has another device that's an ice chest with a pump, a double hose and a pad to go on the shoulder. Put ice and water in the chest, and the pump circulates the ice water out through the hoses to the pad. Can also be used for hot water. Another great help. _________________ Richard

I should rig something like that up with a small submerged indoor water fountain pump. Don't mind me, everything is hilarious to me this week. Off mess sounds good. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295
