One more item I wanted to tackle before welding on the quarter was to repair the bumper bracket and surrounding metal.
The donor had been hit in the rear and mangled this section.
I decided to spend a little more and get the correct Autocraft bumper bracket instead of the cheaper generic one. I've had really good luck with Autocraft and needed something of the correct shape to realign this section of the quarter.
There was some rust and tears that needed to be taken care of first.
Then the new bracket was attached.
I am planning on driving this car a lot so I decided to seam seal.

Time to fix this rusty crossmember
After careful consideration I decided that out of the 3 right side crossmembers I have in my stash, the one from my old 67 rear clip is the most solid to start with.
It does need work though...
The 67's reinforcement plate is thin in spots plus it doesn't have the lower fender stud in it for the early style fenders
...so I am going to use the plate from my 58. It's funny how some of these parts are good in one area and really bad in another.
Early reinforcement transferred to the 67 crossmember
Repaired, bolted to the pan, ready for final welding
The right side quarter is now rock solid and square

Moving to the left rear quarter.
Time to address this mess.
Cutting out the bad stuff
The left quarter from my 58 parts car is wrecked and rotten so I am going to use and modify the quarter from a 67.
Cut off the donor section from the 67 clip
Now, even though this Bug will technically be a "Frankenstein", it doesn't have to look like one.
I'm going to make this 1967 quarter look like an early one. The reinforcement around the body mount is different due to the Z bars on the 67's. Also, the hole behind the upper shock mount is oval shaped on the 67 and round on the early ones.
Time to change that...

icepicks can be fitted to the later door can't they?
no handles might get old pretty quick.
What about speed holes like Magnus does on his 911's?
