Hi folks,

I have a question about semaphores color. Does anyone have any oficial VW catalogue or document that tells when the Semaphore's lens color has changed from Orange to Yellow?? (Also, some people says there was a RED one mainly for Ambulances)
I know here, the TheSamba semaphore guide says color change from Orange to Yellow in August 1957 (111 953 021A). I already talked to Matt about it and here is his response:

Quote:
In terms of the info on semaphores on the Samba I used a number of sources:

An article in Historic VW Club, issue number 6, November 1984 by Bob Hansen but it does not refer to lens colour.

An article by Steve Carr in the VVWCA newsletter but I do not know which issue or year. It is after the Bob Hansen article in November 1984 since it refers to that article as a source of info. My chart on the Samba used this article as a source especially a Section from Jeff Slater and this is the source re: lens colour.

I have copies of both articles.

I believe info from book may also have been a source but I can not find it.

Jeff Slater was the definitive semaphore restorer until the late 1990s when he was in a very bad car accident. He helped me get started in semaphore restoration.

I suggest starting a forum discussion since we do not have definitive source info.

I checked my copy of Progressive Refinements from 1961 but the A section part ends in 1954/55 and does reference semaphore lens colour.

Best regards, Matt

But there are other places sources with other dates (like the one below), but I wasn't able to find one from Volkswagen source.

I don't have a non-semaphore 1955 VW for reference but in response to this above:

You can download this book on the site here:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/progressive_refinements/

I think he meant does NOT reference color?
I think he also means section E too?
A is Body, E is Electrical
The version above does NOT end in 1954/55

I took a quick look and didn't see color mentioned either but I could have missed it.

The book above is the English version, I wonder if a German version would be different at all?

The letter suffix changed on the part number for both suppliers' semaphores when the lens color changed. Matching part numbers to date codes should narrow down the cutover date.

The entry on page E-14 of Progressive Refinements regarding "direction indicating arrows" is for the speedometer, not the semaphores.

Bottom line: "There is no way to tell exactly when the lens color has changed".. ???
