So I was just over at slick deals and someone posted that DICKs SPORTING goods has the bugaboo camp pack for $54. This is currently $109 at REI and Amazon. Here is the link, it comes up as "$89.90" but after you add to cart and click "checkout" it drops to $53.98 plus tax (free ship).
Not sure how long this will last so ...yeah YMMV. Sorry if this is totally against all forum rules...throw stones at me I will learn...
I think this is the kit that fits in the Westy sink!

Great tip! Looks like it's out of stock now. I believe this is the kit that fits into the Westy sink nicely? Maybe it'll come back in stock but it's likely they were discontinuing it. _________________ - Jim

i'm very wary of coated non-stick aluminium cooking implements. the only one in my van at the moment is an MSR frying pan, and i try to be super careful to not scratch it.
for pots, we use a 3 pot version of the nested stainless pots: https://www.mec.ca/en/product/5018-609/Alpine-4-Pot-Set
the downside is they easily scorch. i have a heat spreader which does help, but lets say your jam making is best done at home, and these are best for soup/pasta/etc. _________________ 84 Vanagon Westy, 1.9L, California raised but defected to Canada. |

Thanks so much for that great tip. I also snagged one. GSI is a great company. I've been to their HQ in Spokane and met the owners. This solves an issue for me what to use in the Van. I've been using bulky old home stuff and haven't cooked much out of the van because of the storage challenge dealing with pots n pans n stuff. This will be the impetus for me to design the mini kitchen for my tintop.

Not that I would store it there, but it would be nice to have that detail confirmed. Thanks for the link. _________________ ☮️ |

Thanks for bringing this up. I'm currently in need of a complete Westy re-potting as well.
I'm not sure I like the idea of adding the complicated reassembly that must commence prior to closing the stove lid. I'm already used to the lid as one barrier that I must endure for sink access, so I keep a teapot in the sink cuz it's simple and has no dissembly/assembly procedure.
What's in the cabinet below if not pots/pans? _________________

I used that GSI set for the first few years in my van... it was great until I realized I needed better pots. I cook a lot in my van. The GSI set was good but I couldn't use it on really hot burners, grills, or open fires--all situations I regularly face in cooking from my van. The rubberized grips on the GSI pots melted off within the first year, and the lids started to deform. The nonstick cooking surfaces inside the pots was not holding up well to all the cooking I was doing. My GSI set was a slightly upmarket version that also had four plates, four bowls, and eight cups. All the plates warped and showed scratches from butter knife cuts in the first year. The bowls were great for storing leftovers (good lids) but were of an inefficient shape. The cups were popular--they were round and had sippy cup lids--handy for when we were driving.
I decided I had to get better pots. I drive and camp 15K+ miles per year in my van, and the cooking setup must be spot-on... that's they whole reason I have the Westy.
I have a Magma grill and was really impressed with the build quality of their products, so I bought their nesting pot set:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002TV7QD2
What you get is five stainless pots of different sizes, two lids, and two handles. One of the lids is stepped to fit all the different small pots. These pots have heavy bases that regulate heat much better, and they have no aluminum or teflon materials. Best of all, they all nest into a package that is almost the same size as the GSI set.
Here we are somewhere west of Fort Collins, CO, last week on Bastille Day, 8100' elevation. I have prepared quiche and sausages in risotto for supper with the Magma cookset. The plates and silverware are GSI Pioneer sets in blue and red enamel on steel.
I do miss the shallow GSI nonstick pan--it was perfect for small omelettes. The strainer built into the lids was also a thoughtful feature.
The Magma pots allow for easy double boiler setups, which are often necessary for reheating precooked meals. I used a double boiler setup last week near Custer, SD to steam tamales. In another pot I heated black beans, and in yet another pot I heated queso. These pots take abuse and I can let anyone wash the dishes without worrying about nonstick finishes. They are heavy and you need to handle them decisively, but they really work in all situations. The GSI pots are great, but if you take your van cooking very seriously, I highly recommend these Magma pots.

Let's not get too carried away here because we already have a multi-page topic dedicated to Pots & Pans: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=487523 . Let's try to keep this one about the GSI set/deal.
As for the non-stick coating, I use silicone cooking utensils with my non-stick cookware and use dividers when nesting them all together... no scratching. _________________ ~Kamz

My BugaBoo was on my doorstep when I got home last night.
I wasn't sure if the order was even placed for there was zero post sale contact with me.
Knowing it was teflon coated, I was wondering how it travels without getting scratched being nestled together like they are.
Now that I have it in front of me, it is very cleverly designed. The plates are integral to safe travel, the shape of the plates is such that they fit in the large pot protecting the pots bottom and also cradle the bottom of the small pot preventing any possible contact between the pots.
The bowls/mugs nestle inside of each other and in turn fit nicely in the small pot.
The handle goes in one of the mugs.
The small pot top fits snuggly on top of the small pot with the mugs in it and the large top on top of the small top.
This is all Capped with a frying pan.
Ingenious!
It looks well made, I can't wait to try it out.
Admittedly, the pots are a spun Aluminum and not a heavier cast product, but it IS car camping and weight IS a concern.
Upon first glance, it seems like a great deal!
Time will tell..........
