Hello samba world,
I'm wondering if somebody can help in recommending a good distributor for a 36hp beetle motor? Thank you

VJU4BR8, that's what came with it from the factory (assuming it has the stock carb).

Another would be the VJ4 BR8, which is what I use for my 36hp (bought from Glenn)

It is a mechanical advance only and has the same advance curve as the Bosch 019

It should be VERY easy to find that stock Beetle 36hp distributor too, although I don't know availability in Australia.

In the USA you can find one at any show.

There are even VJU 4 BR 8's that were made in Austrailia! They have a little kangaroo stamped into the housing.

Depends what year 36hp you have.
This 36hp didn't come with that distributor;

That's a Garbe Lahmeyer and used on some of the last 36hp and into the 40hp.

Based on the shape of the vacuum canister I'd have to say 111 series Bosch 40 hp. The GL distributors were painted black like the early 36 hp Bosch. Either way that picture is a mish mash of parts.

That carburetor and distributor are definitely not a factory match even for a late 36 domestic engine. The distributor is from 1966-1969 era, sorry. The fuel pump also appears to be a very early version.

It looks like a 111905205L or M based on the vacuum can style. That would be a year correct distributor for a 65. You can get a mirror or yank it out to read the number

Vacuum canister comparison. On the left the 111 series used with ZV/JU 4 R 3(L) and the 111 905 205 M and N. On the right the 113 series canister used with the 113 905 205 K, M, T and a few others.

Helfen, please post your pics to the Samba gallery so that they will stick around for awhile.
