I'm prepping my 87 (with ~155k miles) for a 1700 eclipse trip in August heat and the transmission is the only thing left on my list of important items. I'm a bit concerned, though, as disturbing the trans does occasionally cause issues, as bits of friction material and stuff *could* clog up passages.

So what say ye? Should I drop the pan, change the filter and replace the fluid, just drain/refill the fluid or should I leave it be for now?

If it ain't broke don't 'fix' it just before a long trip......

Interesting. I tend to agree. On the other hand, my single poll voter voted for the service!

I have two general beliefs about this. One is to perform a trans service if it is due and just make sure to carefully clean the exterior of the pan and all surfaces around the pan before beginning, to make sure not to introduce external contaminants. But I also prefer not to perform too many maintenance tasks and upgrades shortly before a trip, because you just never know exactly what else might be disturbed. So, given that August is only 5 days away and you are only traveling 1700 miles, I say wait. It would be good to know how long it has been since the trans has been serviced as an additional piece of information to consider.

Keep in mind that scheduled Aircraft maintenence is WAY more than an oil change.

I always change my oils before a long journey...... though 1700 miles is hardly long. I can't even get to my daughters in 1700 miles...... though that distance does close the gap considerably!

I vote yes for the oil change but if you are planning any type of a service flush, I vote a loud over whelming NO!!!!!!!

Looking at the pan tells you a LOT about your transmissions health. Read it and you will know your future.

The ATF is definitely dirty. I've seen worse, but it's due for a change. I could just unscrew the filler neck screw, drain it and add ATF.

Or I could just leave it be until September. Not many votes in the poll here, but there's no clear winner yet.

BTW, there's no gear oil drain plug for the diff? Just the pan? That's a bummer because I don't have that pan gasket.

And it's a $23 gasket to boot.

My tech friend tells me that the cork replacement gaskets for the diff section are prone to leaking and finicky to install correctly. I'd leave that one alone.

Then how to drain the diff section? Siphoning through the fill plug isn't really going to cut it, in my opinion.

I bought the gasket and installed.
No leaks.

When I eventually convert my van from manual to auto, I plan on welding in a diff section drain plug
