I need an AC compressor in my 85 Westy. Vintage Air lists a genuine Sanden 508 for $200. When I called they said it would not work since my old R12 style compressor doesn't have the right fittings. He said the new ones have O rings but the old ones were compression fittings. Here's what I have:

Will this rear exit 508 fit?

Also are there any resources showing schematics or data for the camper AC system? The Bentley is pretty slim on camper AC data.

I would say SD508 , but I don't know about the thread size if it's standard or what. It should be.

The compressor lines exiting through the back of the engine bay makes this look a lot like my '84 AC, in which the hoses and run through a plastic tunnel on the inner wall of the closet instead of behind it. Is that what you have?

I think (though have never confirmed) that this may have been a setup that was added at the dealer to a camper that wasn't equipped with AC from the factory. I have never found any schematic that matches it quite correctly and there are a number of differences and not stock looking items that don't match any of the documented options. Though you can get most of the info you need from the early schematic in the bentley.

Oh... where to begin.....

Your 85 unit is very similar to the 86 units. VW A/C was a confusing mixed up mess in the early to mid 80's.

I strongly suggest that you click on the link below and read it.

If you want great A/C, rebuild your system as outlined in this thread.
Your hoses are old, your system is full of black goo and it will NEVER operate well by just patching it up. There is a member here who has been doing repairs for years, always has problems and never has good cold A/C. (Use your existing expansion valve, many new ones simply do not work)

I recently wet bulb measured my system, it is putting out 38* at the vent in the rear.
On a recent Summer day (87*) my Wife wrapped herself in a blanket sitting in the front seat to keep warm!

Yes, it will cost you money now but do it once right and cry only once.

And..... balderdash on the compression fittings!!

They are O rings...... r 12 Orings ....... trouble is most new compressors are shipped for r134a, a different oil inside.

If the cover has the same number of bolts, you can swap the end cover to the new compressor. You need to fill it with oil anyhow. I have not had a problem reusing the gasket from the new compressor.
