I'm thinking about going with a Petronix ign gor my 76 Westy. I'm wondering what I can expect from it. What are the advantages- other than no adjusting points? |

More power, responce, extra milage and a peace of mind,as long as it done properly. I have one on my 79 bus and it has been 3 years so far.I save on tune ups and is still going. _________________ Joel Rosado( papun's son) |

I'm running a single weber progressive, would the Petronix take away some of the lag in the acceleration? |

I'm thinking about it also for my 77 Westy. As far as I know everything in it now is stock. What (where?) should I be looking to be sure I'm replacing the correct ignition? _________________ -=Rob

I think it makes a huge difference. Just buy a back-up for insurance so you don't get stranded. _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

will it take out the dead spot in my accelerartion? It lags at low RPMs, but then picks right up in the mid to high RPM range.
Single Weber, of course. |

What distributor do I have? I think everything is stock, but I don't know the difference....where would I look for model #? _________________ -=Rob

Bajorek - The Pertronix will probably not help your flat spot, but it certainly won't hurt it. The Progressive is an OK carb, but you will never get a smooth power band from it.
Mr.Breeze- If you still have fuel injection then you should have the stock vacuum advance distributor. It's easy to identify by the vacuum hoses running to it and the vacuum cannister attached to the side of it. Pertronix makes two different units for the Bosch distributor. One is for the vacuum advance unit and one if for the mechanical advance unit (009).
I really like the Pertronix with fuel injection, but I can't tell much difference with the Weber progressive carb. I have driven both setups many thousands of miles and never had a problem with the Pertronix. Of course I keep a spare set of points and condenser just in case. Good luck. _________________ "Well, we shot the line and we went for broke

NeverHadaBeetle,
What's the cure for my flat spot (lag from idle)?
How can I tune the single Weber? Bigger jets? If so, where can I get single jets without buying a whole kit? |

I honestly don't know what the cure for the flat spot would be. As D.Russell indicated, the 009 is notorious for having a flat spot. I usually think of the 009 as being a 2-speed distributor; wide open hauling a$$ or sittting still while idling at a stop light. Not much in between. Unfortunately, I have had much the same experience with the Weber progressive. Even if you have a vacuum advance distributorm, it could still be sticking a little or the vacuum diaphragm could be leaking. You could remove the distributor then clean and lubricate it and check the diaphragm by sucking air through the vacuum hose that attaches to it. This obviously isn't a very sophisticated way to check it, but you should see the plate inside the distributor move about 1/8 inch or so. The Weber obviously needs to be jetted properly and this is something that is fairly easy to play around with. Jets are cheap and easy to switch. Go to the the Redline Weber website for more advice or give them a call them. They also have nice exploded views of their carbs on the Website. Good luck. _________________ "Well, we shot the line and we went for broke

A slightly larger jet might help on the flat spot, also cleaning the carb might help, certainly won't hurt, and if you're going to pull it out and take it apart, you might as well clean it too. Jeremy |

I have always thought that the 34-PICT 3 carb and the 009 are the problem. Will adding a vacuum advance distributor take care of this flat spot? _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

Actually I have a 34pict3 and a 009, and I don't really notice a flat spot. Maybe a PO put a bigger jet in there. I figured if it works for the 34pict3 it might also work for a weber. Jeremy |

You don't have a flat spot? When I am starting from a standstill the car will go forward then the engine sputters for a second then goes back to normal. If I rev the engine high from a stop there is no flat spot. Is my carb bad you think? _________________ "I spud therefore I yam." |

34 PICT 3 and an 009 dizzy combo are notorious for the flat spotting problem. Had the same issue for a while in my Bug until I switched in a SVDA from aircooled.net. That, and a Pertronix added at the same time made all the difference. |
