I've got a weird issue bus ran perfect last weekend then went to drive it to my parents (half a mile) it makes it about 5 min and dies. Turn the key on and nothing from the fuel pump. Let it sit for a while it fires up and runs (cooler evening temps, nw fl). I've tried searching but it brings up over 900 entries. Thanks in advance. _________________ 1976 Type II Westy P22

typical of a plugged fuel line or filter. When it sits for a minute without a demand the gas manages to seep through until it runs out again. _________________ "Always waiting for tomorrow ruined everything"

That's what I thought but I can't even hear the pump running. _________________ 1976 Type II Westy P22

I don't think the pump runs until the engine is turning over? _________________ "Always waiting for tomorrow ruined everything"

It is not supposed to. Someone wired it to the Ignition switch.
Check your fuses.
Check for loose wires at the fuel pump. Positive and ground.
Pull the hose off the inlet to the fuel pump and make sure you are getting good flow. If your not getting a bath, the filter or the gas tank are clogged.
Pull the end of the fuel hose off the engine and put the it in a bottle and test your fuel capacity.
Good luck

Ok I may have not been clear on when I say the fuel pump is running when I turn the key. It is in the "on" position as it would be during normal operation of the vehicle and the fuel pump normally comes on I turn it a bit further for the starter to engage and it runs normally. I drove the bus a couple times over the weekend and finally had it show the same problems. Fired up normal, backed out of the driveway and started for my parents and got to the same exact spot (i'm guessing the amount of fuel in the carb bowls dictating this ) and it died. When I turned the key on I could not hear the normal fuel pump thump. I'm going to be pulling it apart sometime this week, checking voltage and to see if the pump is actually pumping. _________________ 1976 Type II Westy P22

Note the 3 ignition switch positions.
The fuel pump is supposed to only come on in position #3 as the starter engages. Commonly known as the cranking position.
After the engine starts. A set of contact points in the AFM (air flow meter) close and keep the pump on.

Take a look at this write up on the Fuel pump relay.

I figured out the problem. When the PO re-wired the fuel pump they didn't do a very good job of it. It's been on my list of fixes just never got to it _________________ 1976 Type II Westy P22
