I've been here for 15 years and I must be pretty naive, but it came as a shock to me that there was that much dislike ("hate" is a pretty strong word) of The Samba. Facebook to me is such a mess, I am really surprised that anyone would be looking for serious VW info on that site. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

How this forum is different - I will compare to a Jeep forum I am on. They welcome all Jeeps, stock or nothing even close to it. You build your Jeep how you want and everyone likes it. This forum, you guys welcome all VWs except ones that stray away from a typical VW. You see threads with bone stock patina Bugs that people dont put too much work in to and the thread blows up. Then you have other threads where you know someone has spent 100s if not 1000s of hours making it to their specs and know one cares. In fact, some hate it because you did not preserve it or restore it. Who cares. As long as the owner likes it, go with it. Its still a VW at heart. |
to your point, the domestic car scene is WAY different....from bone stock to all out drag, they embrace all of it. here is seems you are a rock star if you pull a turd out of a swamp, but a narrowed beam on it, camber it to death and roll it. very odd crowd here... _________________

I'm a relative newbie here, only 2 years, but I love this site and check in 2-3 times a day. What I hate is Facebook. There are WAY too many different Facebook sites (if that's the term) for any topic. How to choose among them? I also hate that on FB it's all about what's new. It's hard to search for previous posts. Forums are way, way better for consolidating topics. Not to mention, most Facebook comments are worthless cheerleading and not helpful.
At my daughter's urging I tried hard to give Facebook a chance but I had to give up. Every time I turned around there was yet another enthusiast's group created for whatever topic I'm interested in. _________________ Gone but not forgotten: 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1966) - another 1950 Hoffman split (restored in 1996) |

I also want to add that I think the moderators on The Samba are the chief reason that this site works as well as it does. They do it out of a love for the hobby. Without them I think this site would descend into chaos and would be dead in a few months. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

I've only been here a couple of years but I've enjoyed most of the interactions I've had here. Actually a fairly helpful crowd and a great resource. I felt that due to the amount of free info I've found here that I should contribute so I did pay for my star. I've really only met one individual that wasn't a fan of The Samba and I get mixed answers as to why. Part of it I think is because he is an Empi dealer and doesn't like the hate that is evident here for anything except OG. He also made a comment something to the effect of "anyone actually building motors for a living doesn't have time to spend all day on a forum". I'm not sure I agree with this feeling as I've received some pretty knowledgeable advice I feel. I will say there is a lot of emphasis on bigger is better in the performance forum, but I guess it goes with the reason for it. People do need to realize that some of us are truly on some sort of budget and we can't all pay once, cry once and buy he best of the best. Sometimes we have to make do. I have also found a few members that tend to shit on people's ideas without offering a solution. I find that pointless.
Overall, I have few true complaints about the forum and hope it persists for quite a long time. _________________ 1960 Indigo Blue Ragtop (Blue Barry)

I know why they hate it. There are reasons I think it sucks too...and why I avoided any activity here until about ...2009?..I think?
And in my opinion...in most cases... the fault is squarely divided 50% to one of two causes:
1. In many cases the fault is directly with the individual who hates the Samba...and probably hates ANY of the VW or Porsche or car forums in general. These people treat anything they do on-line as a "free service".
They want it to operate like "Google"...with no bartering, bantering, drama or interactive friction.
They expect to post a concise question on their part...and even of they do not know the part name, number or even have usable spelling....good old Samba-Google will know what they mean and provide a precise answer, link, video or downloadable how-to.
Not getting that....the level of difficulty of having to verify what they are asking about, deal with short tempers....and interjections of absolute BS in the middle of the thread...pisses them off. Their fault.
2. The other 50%?.....Bluntly put....I would say about 30% of all posting in the Samba is worthless banter....like ......
Question: I have a 73 type 3 that is blowing blue smoke...what could be the problem?'
Among the many answers in the thread: "hey...I had a blue type 3 once....do you know Bob in Phoenix?"
or.....something that is not totally out of line...but is too far off on the fringe.....like...."its the way you are driving it"
This 50% is the fault of the Samba.
The Samba........I come here because of the broad range of subjects I am interested in based around just a couple of cars and engine types....the activity level....is afforded simply because of the huge numbers of active members....and not because of it being a better system or forum site.
But make no mistake...while its a great goldmine of a resource....the Samba is an absolute ghetto trailer park of personalities and interactions.
Its only saving factor...really...is its absolute volume and the huge archives of information. I do like the Samba a lot....but its still a whorehouse of sorts.
If you go over to the STF or Rennlist or even the Vortex for watercooled.....which really are the same type of thing as the Samba....you get a much more reserved...and for the most part more technically informative conversation with virtually no drama. Different atmosphere.

Ok, I have figured out ONE thing that I HATE about The Samba-
Here goes-
Seeing so many really knowledgeable VW folks passing over the years. Think Russ Wolfe. The guys who worked at the VW dealers, wrenching on these cars back in the 60's and 70's. Or, the guys who have decades of hands on VW wrenching experience.
Spend a few months on this site and you can quickly identify who knows their shit and who are posers. Most of the really experienced folks are in their 50's and 60's and like our VW's, are not getting any younger. I can only think of a couple of guys who are good that are in their 20's and 30's.
Let's hope we can continue to get the younger generation into these VW's before all the experts pass on. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

....you are right!....my car is my old lady. I go to the garage and she beats my ass (some days I win).
Oddly enough.....my garage is a "kit garage".....probably came from Lowes. Just big enough for the car and four work benches along one wall. Thats why the basement and one bedroom are workshops.......but yeah.....it was a store bought garage.....
