One good wind gust and the car falls of that cupped jack. No where near good enough. For raising a car to change a tire, ok. Do it quickly. I wouldn't use that to raise a car to put a jack stand under it, though. |
I'm with you I would never get under that van jacked up like that. I would not even use it to change a tire. My stomach turned when I saw the photo. _________________ -- PF

I've used the OE jack for years to lift the car to put it on jack stands and, fortunately, I've never had a problem. I try to never remove a wheel until the jack stand is supporting the van but I have had to change to the spare tire once while on the road with no stand but the jack served me well. Like the fellow who fell off the building said on the way down, "So far so good".

Should work fine for my van. It is a superior piece of equipment.

I carry the stock one plus two scissor jacks picked up at the local wreckers. I also use them for leveling at the camp site and the van feels better when it's more solid and there's two moving about.
I also made a "t" shaped hex-shaft tool that fits in my cordless drill for quick up/down of the scissor jacks. They fold up very small and are relatively light.
That way I don't need the dog-leg bar for the jacks.Obviously I also take the drill which doubles as a light impact for the sockets in the tool bag which I know everyone carries _________________ 82 Vanagon Westy - AAZ 1.9 TD, HE200 Holset, WAIC, 27.75 dia tires, Electric power steering, 5-speed AAP w/.078 5th

Geez! You guys worry too much!
We are only changing a flat tire with these jacks as sole support.
Flat tire?
Pull over ASAP,
Stop in safe secure area if possible,
Pull on parking brake,
Turn on 4 ways,
Undo spare tire clam shell nut,
release clam shell,
Let clam shell crash to the ground, don't get hurt by it!
Wrestle out spare,
Roll to flat tire corner,
Get out jack of choice,
Loosen wheel nuts/bolts
Position jack to raise wheel off the ground.
Jack up until inflated tire radius clears ground,
Slip spare under frame,
Undo nuts,
Remove tire,
Slip flat under frame,
Pull out spare from under frame,
Put on spare and gently snug nuts.
Pull out flat from under frame,
Let jack down,
Tighten lug nuts to guessed torque value,
Put jack away,
Put flat in clam shell,
Wrestle clam shell up until it clicks,
Install clam shell nut,
Continue journey safe and alive. _________________ Stop Dead Photo Links how to post photos

My "new" Toyota Jack showed up today....sweet! Tried it out & it's definitely an upgrade.
FWIW/re: Doug's "stiction" comment, I coated the head of the Jack with a few light
layers of liquid electrical tape...basically high density brush-on vinyl coating:
I feel much more secure knowing this is in my kit...thanks for the recommendation, y'all!
- Dave
PS: As mentioned earlier, I will keep the OG jack for leveling @ campsites, but this now will be my go-to "tire" jack... _________________ 86 White Wolfsburg Westy Weekender

You know? Ever since we started talking about these Toyota crank bottle jacks, I started thinking.......Hmmm where have I seen this design before?
Found this up in my '50y Chebbie truck parts cabinet.
'65 Mustang under the brown blanket
Then started thinking, "We'll, if this is up in my cupboard, what's in the truck?." Remove the seat bottom and sure enough, another crank bottle jack.
So, since I have an extra crank bottle jack which is 5.5" at rest and 15.5" fully extended, it's going into the camper. _________________ '90 Westy / automatic.

Taller than my Toyota pickup unit... Did it come with the crank handle?
|
My dimensions are 8" closed, 18" extended. On a flat tire it'll be a little too tall to go directly
under the A/trailing arm as Doug suggests, but even with the trouble of using several leveling
blocks & the leap-frog method he describes it's still better than the OG jack...
Came with hook, extension/handle, lug wrench & storage bag, all for just half a C-note, shipped!

Still concerned if these jacks will fit under the suspension if you have a flat tire. Maybe I need to poke a hole in a tire to see _________________ '90 Westy / automatic.

It looks like it would fit but I'm sure there are other places that would work. |

This is the one I like for working in the driveway. I like it so much I bought two. On the road I carry the OG Vanagon jack and I will be very cautious if I ever use it.
