I'll look in my Foreign Car Guide archives, there was an article showing speaker installation in those brackets in one issue. |

Early smooth speaker mount from a '53 deluxe.
Later ribbed or stamped style from a '54 deluxe.

Great information I especially like the VW manual document and picts. does anyone know if VW had sold speakers or did they just provide these holders for the new owners to install their own speakers? Also I don't understand exactly how speakers are mounted is there a hole with a grommet in the headliner? I saw the image of the original headliner installed and can't see it close up.
I agree the more I learn the more I love this hobby it is never ending. Thanks for all the info guys/gals. _________________ American Red Cross Safe And Well:

They are fresh out, & more of a 'by request only' product.
They are a very fair price - best to call/email Rick on that one.
Funny how some are bent up:
Around 8/10 I have pics of are straight:

Mines are the smooth ones, fitted inside the gutter with 4 screws. No weldings !
Maybe the first ones were installed that way on order ?
They have been in used, there is still the speaker cables going through the small folding tab.
We can also notice than there is 4 holes to hold the speaker on mines, against 3 holes on all the other pictures posted before.
Bus is from very late june 52.

Please can someone explain/show the wiring configuration for the speaker pods
ie
Does a live and an earth run along the lhs gutter tray, front to rear?
And a live and an earth run along the rhs gutter tray, front to rear?
Or a live and an earth runs down one side, then across the rear to the second speaker?
I haven’t seen a wiring diagram that covers this.

I just checked for the wires, THEY WERE THERE!!! in harness tubing with the ends tucked into the insulation ready for use. I did not find any on the passenger side, i guess stereo did not exist yet. |
Has anyone ever seen speakers installed behind a headliner? Other than David's picture on page one of some large ones screwed to those plates, I have never seen or heard of these ever being used. And there is no way that those big ones in the pimp bus would fit behind a headliner.

It’s been a few years but if I recall back when I did my “clown bus” (53 deluxe) the original speaker wire harness was still tucked up on the left side rail. I don’t believe any speaker had ever been installed though.
I did ,however, upgrade the bus with some pimp my ride 4” or 5” speakers to both sides and ran the headliner over them. Undetectable for the most part.
I would have to dig through my old harness to see if I still have the original wires. Don’t recall if I used them or pulled them to replace with real speaker wire. _________________ www.thebustransfer.com

Thanks guys
So a two-core cable running down the driver’s side gutter tray
I presume this wiring drops down the split pillar at the front...

Does anyone have any pictures of this insulation felt in place in a sunroof deluxe?
I’m thinking it is two large rectangles glued inside the rear roof area
And two large rectangles glued inside the front roof area
(But I’ve never seen a picture) _________________ -StockRocks- |

Believed to be speaker wiring in an early 54 Deluxe:
^Woven sheath on the left there (behind mirror mounting)
^Runs down the split, and exits below _________________ -StockRocks- |
