Just took the axle tubes off the transmission so I could press the bearing housings off. I Had use a 1.750 dia bar and they pressed right out. I will clean them up and press on the new axle housings with all new bearings and seals. Making some progress, I have the front ready to go on.
I sprayed the top side with bed liner coating just on the floor areas and kept the tunnel gloss black. Ready to flip it over and do the bottom side. This POR15 does not come off so if you use it be careful , It splattered onto my feet ( yeah I know barefoot ) its been days and yeah I do take showers .LOL Laughing

out with the crusty and rusty axle tubes and in with the chrome. Had to press off the castings and press the axle tubes back in . Not to bad of a job as long as you have a press. Need to paint the end castings.

I do not know at what year the change occurred, but up to a certain year around mid 60's, VW poured wax into those 4 holes. After that, VW pressed in a oblong steel plug.

The non-plugged units became leakers after a long service life.

Reply on hole behind the stud -- You can double nut the stud to remove it - then install the plug. Just a side note: - it is best to use the metal plugs (Weddle sales new and used) - or if you know someone who has old tranny's laying around you can rob them from an old one. I have seen people use silicone and the tranny oil break it down and start leaking after awhile.
