What do I do with this extra rear sway bar in a box in the living room? |
Run with just the front for long enough to have a good feel for what it does or doesn't do to improve the handling. Then install the rear bar and let us know if it further improves or harms the handling. |

Hey Geo, I did not see you post addressed to me. I also had a problem until I found the slit. And yes, it's no sports car and you need to drive responsibly with it. I really like the way my bus handles. As far as rolling over, I had a not to bright friend back in the 80's who put a bus on it's side with the stock bar. He thought it looked like crap with one side crumpled up so he laid it down on the other side on purpose so both sides matched. True story. |

OK I got it done over a couple of dark fall, flood lit evenings out under under the stars.
One hour+ dis-assembly, one hour+ install: The FRONT sway bar job I mulled over for 30 years.
The slightly stiffer front ride is fine, but the highway is still scary. Time to to seriously think about those 40 year old 137K ball joints, some with busted boots. (Steering & linkage seems fine).
That and some new tires to go with the aging KYB gas adjust shocks.
That's my report; maybe some pix to follow. |

You probably already tried this, but looking at page one, the OP has a second pair of vise grips pinching the gap together further. _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

You probably have it correct, but do you have the clamp in the right direction? You may need to vise grip the clamp on the runners close to where the clip would slide on. The jockey it into place. I did mine 8 years ago so my memory is a bit sketchy. |

Even with very large vice grips on it as well it won't seem to go. I'm starting to think maybe I am just a wuss here... _________________ 1977 Champagne Transporter Custom Camper.

Finally got it on. Broke the clamps in the process.
My issue was that I was using huge channel locks. What I needed was a small vice grip that I could crank down with medium channel locks.
No pictures bc it's ugly as hell.
Thx for help _________________ 1977 Champagne Transporter Custom Camper.

The trick is not to pinch the flat sides of the clamp, pinch the tips together. Pinching the flat sides will sort of force the ends apart. Clamp with channel locks (good shape teeth), then vice grips a tad tighter to hold it. Pinch the channel locks on the last end to get covered by the clip, so you have room to slid the clip on to start. Make sense? _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

I'm having a heck of a time getting the sway bar busing and strap installed. Does this look OK? I keeps squishing out on the fat end.

Replacement bracket is to skinny. Well skinnier then stock. Looks fine to me! _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Ancient topic, but closest I could find.
I have an EMPI bar with red urethane bushings, but no new clamp assemblies.
Are the bushings same size? Can I use the original clamps or do I need new?
I see that I'll need longer mount bolts. _________________ 1978 Westfalia stock 2.0 FI
