Here's a great quote from the article" "I had the disconcerting sense of watching a life become a life-style brand."
We've had lots o fistfights and words here about lifestyle. Here's someone else's view of the issue.

Am I punching a hornet's nest? Maybe!
Plus... It's a BUS, people, not a van. _________________ '71 Westy w/ a 1776 singleport, 34P3 & 205Q. Points.

Meh, I don't think the Vanagon qualifies as a bus.
"A fruit basket & a travel bidet" sounds like a couple of douches. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I guess my question is what happens to your lifestyle when age takes its toll on her bikini looks ?

I'm too old and unattractive to make a go of that lifestyle. Not to mention too frigging lazy to want to spend my hours editing photos and trying to get just the right shot and sucking up to corporate types for sponsor money. No thanks. I'll keep my job as a corporate robot. But they will take away my '71 Westy when they pry it from my cold dead fingers..... _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

I saw this in the New Yorker and I had the same thought as sunnydog: this is a samba hornet's nest. To me it seems like their attempt to escape the rat race ended with the rat race catching up to them in their Vanagon. Could be worse. _________________ '70 Bus

Didn't know where else to put this, so will leave it here. From one of my favorite newsletters, The Hustle:
#Vanlife
Turns out, RVs aren’t just for snowbirds and retirees anymore.
Industry figures released last week indicate that sales of recreational vehicles are the highest they’ve been in years -- and millennials are in the driver’s seat.
On the road
The modern RV market first started taking off the 1950s, and by the ‘70s, camper vans and motorhomes were a bustling business. With cheaper flights and vacation packages becoming more available in the ‘80s and ‘90s, the RV was relegated to restless middle-aged travelers and badass grandmas.
But in the last few years, live-in vehicles have seen a big resurgence, largely driven by technology and changing vacationing habits.
I.e. millennials
According to a recent survey, millennials now make up 38% of all RV users (and only 31% of the general population).
See, a lot of younger folks today have the ability to do their jobs remotely -- and they also enjoy more flexible work schedules. This, coupled with social media FOMO, has led to an increase in mobile lifestyles.
And millennials aren’t just the fastest-growing sector in the RV space -- they’re also the industry’s biggest marketers. If you have any doubt about that, scan Instagram for hashtags like #homeiswhereyouparkit and #vanlife.

This is what I see after the first paragraph of The New Yorker article:
"You've read your last complimentary article this month. To read the full article, SUBSCRIBE NOW"
I'll pass.
I liked the photo but I wish the guy and girl had switched places. |
