So I installed a set of 2.5 on the 65, definitely not as easy as 70s bug. Not I'm having problems with turning is a bit hard, and mainly a lot more steering wheel play. Any recommendations? I read caster shims would help?

Make sure the king pin bushings were reamed correctly.

Make sure the link pins are adjusted properly.

Make sure the king pin thrust washers are the correct thickness.

Make sure your link pin shims are all in the proper place.

Make sure your tie rods are in good condition.

Make sure your steering box is centered before setting toe.

Adjust steering box (top and bottom adjustment).

Add caster shims to regain the correct amount of caster based on the current rake.

Yeah, the reaming of the king bushings is the key to having a steering motion that is smooth yet has no slop. The specs are in the Bentley manual and I'm sure they are mentioned here on the samba as well.
I would certainly review this part of the installation to rule out any binding of the steering knuckle.
