I need to repair a small hole in the front bumper mount of my 1964 notchback. Anyone have an idea of the best method?
I'm thinking about cutting along the red line and then sandblast everything and repair the rust on the workbench. A lot of work, but it seems very difficult to separate the 2 bumper mount parts from the inner wing when mounted on the car.

I would wire wheel the bumper mount flange to find the spot welds, drill those out and separate that piece to see what you have for rust under there. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Yup, my thought as well. Plus, you'll be able to "hide" the repair easier.
The only way I'd cut that much out (to the red lines), would be IF it had more rust. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Separating the bumper mount flange wasn't too hard, but of course there was more rust under it.
Also note that there is absolutely no primer or rust proofing between the flange and the spare wheel well from the factory.
After some Scotch-Brite pad things look better.

Yes, your thread has given me much inspiration for my work.
Right now I think I will repair this in place and not cut anything more than the rust.
