FI gets a bad rap because nearly everyone is dealing with a system that has been neglected for almost 40 years, replace the petrified rubber hoses and seals and clean/tighten the electrical connections and it's ready for another 40 years of neglect. There's also the mechanic who thinks it works by some sort of witchcraft so they make no attempt to understand it, in reality it's very basic and easier to fix than a carb problem. The only "special tools" required are a pressure gauge and a volt/ohm meter, with those you can test each component and prove it's faulty before just throwing parts at it. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

AND- a quick look at the sparkplugs can send you in the right direction for repairs. Maybe there is a trouble shooting manual out there like the T3 trouble shooter- that was a basic "If - Then" book.
Basically you check one system at a time depending on the symptoms--
1 start- crank? fuel pump running-- injectors firing? ignition?
All simple to check -
You get into trouble and abandon the system when you have multiple failures. and co-joined symptoms.- but methode is the key-
love reaching for the key and have it spring to life- no pumping the throttle- revving it up-- it just works. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

So it sounds like not only are people not scared off by the fuel injection, but it seems like it might be preferred. Sounds like a properly set up and maintained fuel injection system might have more headaches down the road??? |
the problem is parts are getting VERY hard to find. and if you're a "gentleman mechanic" it can be a lot to wrap your head around.
not too long ago, the TS2 a very critical part went NLA....but I think bosch has made another run of them. when those parts 100% dry up, it's mac gyver mode to use the antique FI.
a good running FI system is nice, but it can take 1,000's of dollars to make one right, depending on where you start from.
either way, FI or carbs are the least of your worries. finding a CLEAN bus is the #1 priority here. _________________

The L-jet fuel injection system is decently dependable and easy enough to fix. Some people just don't make much of an effort to learn about the system and how to maintain it. This includes a lot of people who work on these cars for a living. I can guaranty you very few people ever go step by step through the diagnostic procedure given in the manual. They will fight their systems for days to avoid doing this 15 minute job, this too includes professional mechanics who are charging you for your time.
The biggest problems with L-jet are vacuum leaks and the O2 sensor, most of the rest of the parts have a very long life and seldom give trouble even after 40 years. |

X2, I'd choose a rust free shell over a polished turd that claims to be "restored" any day. That's not to say there aren't some legit shiny buses, but there's too many flippers playing the game these days and most aren't what they outwardly appear to be, if you do the work yourself (or supervise the job a proven shop does for you) you know there's no suprises hiding beneath the bling. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
