I just received yesterday a shift coupler from a relatively large VW parts supplier, was only one choice available for these from them, didn't know it was EMPI. And the opening was too small to fit over the end of the shift rod, I had to "re-engineer" that. I don't blame that supplier, but I'm sure I'm not the first to have that happen.

I did contact the supplier as they too could get back to EMPI (I'm sure all the EMPI couplers are the same, just engineered and manufactured incorrectly). So basically another example of an imperfect copy, when getting it right would not have required much effort.

I'm not near a city right now, so my only other choice (assuming non-EMPI couplers are available) besides waiting a week/several days would've been using the old coupler which wasn't too bad (my issue was the shift bushing, it turns out) or the EMPI rectangles in the old coupler cage.

New coupler cage on the right definitely has opening smaller by a few mm; even though I didn't have them aligned perfectly for my one-handed photo, the difference is readily apparent.

last time I bought a coupler, I think I only used the rubber pieces, and put them in my old cage.

that was at least 5 years ago. I can't imagine they have gotten any better

Use NOS/OEM and you hopefully won't have these problems. It is sad that vendors just assume that because it is new and shiny and skin packed that it is good. Past experience should tell them to check these things fit before selling them. Ditto magnetic drain plugs that won't work with oil strainers - well, not unless you want to punch a hole in the strainer when you tighten it down.
