I'm a newby so if some one already solved this please forgive me.
I have an 82 vanagon CA. I was driving along and needed some more go, smashed down on the throttle, van backfired and died. Tried to start nothing DED dead. Checked fuel at cold start replaced ignitor ,and now it starts on the fuel from cold start. Went thru the bently, lots missing for CA. I went to the # 1 pin with connector disconnected from ecu. Cranked engine to check for sig fried my probe. I'm leaning to the fuel enrichment relay, but i cant even find one. Has anyone made one? Also tired of 35 year old electronics. Does any one have stand alone know how. Trying to sort out TPS to stock throttle body. Thank you for any help. Need my casa back on the road. |

The 35 year old FI on these tends to be pretty dependable if the mice haven't chewed up the wires. The worst thing is the number of hoses, one of which may have blown off when the engine backfired. Have you done the FI diagnostic in the manual? Good place to start. |

I've checked hall sender it strobes logic probe, voltage out to module 12 vdc. Removed idle compensator and plugged straight across to ignitor, checked all vacuum lines and s boot is new. Have voltage to injectors but they are not cycling. I have taken apart the fuel enrichment relay and it looks like the smoke has not been let out. Removed can from ecu has some oxidation but no water damage. Thinking of going thru harness. Have spark have fuel no injector pulse. Does anyone have a fuel enrichment relay (OXS Relay) or know where to get one? Wheres a good place to get harness parts? |

Dumb question perhaps but you have checked that the wire from FI harness to coil terminal 1 (negative) is connected?
That's how the ECU knows when to pulse the injectors. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

A backfire through the intake, may have done one of a few things.
1. Physically damaged the flapper door in the air flow sensor unit. Need to visually check that.
2. Backfire through the intake, blew one of the large vacuum hoses off of the intake somewhere. Need to visually check all the hoses, specifically the larger ones.
3. Backfire through the intake, popped the airflow sensor boot off of its seat either at the throttle body or the air flow sensor. You need to look closely. Or the boot has split along one of the bellows. You'd need to remove it and examine it closely.
Backfires through the intake are never good. _________________ ☮️ |
