I thought I would update this thread to show the 1971 removal since it is just a bit different than the earlier bay bus years.
Here is the 1971 ignition assembly.

Step 1 – Loosen the 2 set screws indicated by the arrows. I had to grind a screwdriver to get the shaft narrow enough and the blade wide enough.

Step 2 – Make a removal tool out of a heavy coat hanger using the dimensions below as a guide.

Step 3 – The spring release hole on the 1971 ignition housing is on the back side (earlier years it is on the front, and much easier to get at). I struggled for 20 minutes before I got it, as I wasn’t sure just exactly where the hole was. Hopefully the photos below give you some idea where to feel for it. Once the coat hanger hits the hole, the ignition barrel pops right out…. I promise!

Here is a photo of the back side of the ignition housing showing the location of the release hole.

I see from the title that this procedure should work on a '72. I have been trying for an hour and no such luck Sad Am I just a looser who can't find the g spot?

I’ve found that a coat hanger isn’t strong enough. Using welding rod has worked
