May need to use a screwdriver and pop the latch open.
Make sure the pin in the Oval hole (red arrow) is all the way against the end.
Once you do get it open. Pull out the latch release and look in the opening and make sure the pin is retracting all the way. If it is not, pull the latch apart and repair. You may need to file the pin down a little and make it shorter.

Pull out on the knob and take another picture of this. You may need to pull down on the handle to get the latch to release.

Your latch looks normal from here. The latch pulls straight back. Sometimes pulling the handle down while pulling the latch out helps.

the knob isn't pulling at all thus the pin isn't moving, i think we have to take the latch off to repair.

Did you try pulling down on the black top handle while pulling the knob?

Yeah, sometimes they can get tight if there is some upward pressure on the pop top-perhaps from new gaskets or something being a little out of adjustment. I definitely have to pull down on the black handle on mine when I have the assist struts installed.

I sometimes have to hang on the big black handle with all of my weight to get the pin to pop out/back..

Also looks like you might have pinched some top material in the latch?
That'll make it harder for sure..

The top doesn't just 'go down'.
Spend a bunch of time rolling it up and tucking it away from everything as it goes down.
Make doubly sure it gets free of the hinges and latch, etc. before clipping it down that last bit..!

So husband said he had tried pulling it down but we tried with me pulling down with all my height while he pulled the knob and it worked!!!! We will be taking a lot more time to put the top down this time.

Getting closer to our first camping trip! Which is scheduled in two weeks!

Was the fabric caught in the latch or something?

Glad you got it figured out though! Does seem like something is a little off for it to be that tight.

No fabric seemed to be caught... eventually we are going to put on a new pop top canvas so hopefully we can get it looked at it then

Ok that is a VW Type IV engine with Fuel Injection.
First thing you guys want to do is replace the Fuel Hoses.

Up in smoke... Bus fires... don't let it happen to you!

Looks like you've got the upgraded 70 amp alternator or at least the pully from one.

Pop top fabric... I do not have experience with the Baywindow pop tops, but have many excellent camping trips in our 1987 Westfalia and support Clatter's practice of taking time to "roll" the fabric up as the top comes down... doing this keeps it from hanging out from under the pop top and getting wind-whipped, as well as allowing the top to seal properly, and keeping it from binding up the whole process. Mine has a small hole where I was careless and let it get pinched by the pop top latch... the thing you and your husband were just dealing with. Be mindful of this. Be a smart sailor! Laughing

Engine looks unusually well-cared for. Cool You definitely want to change the fuel lines with ethanol-rated fuel injection hose. Tcash provided you some info on that. Whatever you do, keep in mind your gasoline supply is under 30-35 PSI. Choose your hose and fittings wisely.

Use these types of clamps, available at most auto parts stores:

DON'T use this crap on fuel injection:

We are going to San Onofre! I see you are in OB! I used to live there and love it so much! A VW hotspot! Now in Bay Park so I still get there quite a bit. Do you have any fav localish camping spots? Especially ones that don't require booking 6 months in advance?

San O is nice. My fave this year was Crystal Cove, Laguna Beach. South Carlsbad is awesome! But these all need reservations way early on. You can get some spots near Julian for this month.

We had an amazing first camping trip this past weekend! Malibu and Encinitas booked for the coming months!

Only issue we had really was the smell of gas. I was reading and I am going to look into my fuel filler liner. Is that something that can easily be replaced by myself? My fuel lines have already been replaced.

Also the lock on my back bench sit is missing so I need to look into a fix for that since I don't like that it can lift up with my son's seat in there. It has the bottom piece but not the top.

If the rubber fuel filler hose is original going from the fill spout to the tank along with all the vent hoses, they need to be changed. They dry out. The smaller vent lines crack.

There's many threads including in the "stickies" that show how it's done.
