The engine in my 181 (1974) is a 2110 which dynode at 135 rwhp. I want to upgrade the starter to a high torque type. I know Things use a different type starter than regular Type 1 vws.
My question is how do I select a high torque that will operate as it should, proper engagement and disengagement?
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Just use a Bosch 17 X A Thing or auto starter.

The Thing already uses the self-supporting auto-stick style starter which is the strongest one offered by VW. No issues using one to start my 2232 in the Thing or 2110 in my 72 beetle.

The 17x makes a big difference. I was able to find one on Amazon.
