Aside from the paint color, cheap upholstery, tires and bonus louvers it looks like a clean solid truck from here. $24K isn't really out of line, especially compared to all the work and expense to restore a truck, welcome to the 21'st century. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I always figured any whitewall tires were not rated tires. Furthermore, I don't like the gussied up look of stuff that just makes the look busy and not functional. So, monochromatic paint schemes and blackwalls for me. And all the busy-ness on the back corners? No.
Pretty clean 68, tho.

kind of sortta maybe...
if the bus is solid and complete it's a steal. lack of description and photos make that a hard call
and I agree with BD...other than some poor choices in colors and modifications, that's in line for a DC. if it were stock, low to mid 30's easy _________________

Exact same ad in thSamba.com classifieds.
Member John Snell.
Reminds me of a line from a movie once: "looks like da big fish got away!"
I mean, most of it got away. WTF is left?
I fear John has an idea for the value when completed that is a lot more than my idea of value.
Oh, yes, you can make it into a $30k 1978 Westy, but it might cost you $40k to do it.
I personally believe that there are precious few Bay window buses selling anywhere for over $30k.
I mean, just look and "watch" some on ebay. They will piddle around and the auction will end and the things are at $15k and the buy it now is $20-30k. Then the guy runs the auction again. Yes, some might be shill bidding, but if the shill bidder ends up high bidder, the seller still owes Ebay their toll.
This 78 should be damned near free I feel. Or, John can put the interior and door, engine and tranny back in it. Then get $2500 for it. And the title!

honestly, I think the bus bubble is starting to deflate.
seems no one is doing any "real" build threads anymore...lot's of 'look at me, I am just going to cobble this bus together' kind of shit.
some pretty nice buses at reasonable prices seem to linger here week after week. same in the split forum as well...
I 1/2 thought for a second on buying a DC. the reality is 8 cars in my stable now, I really don't need another (all but one are registered/insured as well)
got to wonder if the tide is turning, or if people are just not getting into them anymore. I have to wonder with the slow down if the boom was created by people that "had to have one" got one, then dumped it after they scratched the itch to own one. I kind of don't see them making a huge comeback any time soon....
even speaking to some vendors, its seems sales have slowed too _________________

I totally agree. I think for the last year or so. Even in the Porsches, the early 911 have really dropped. What has NOT dropped is the very early high end cars. That $290k 23 window. is a big number. But there are a lot of 23's from $75-125k on the Samba list. And some seem pretty nice. And that Binz went for a high auction price. A 1951 Porsche went for nearly $1M. (I just talked to the guy that did the metal work on it.) And I think other early Pre A Porsches have brought big money.
But the working man's stuff has just fallen flat. 2014-16 I sold a ton of stuff on Ebay. Beginning this year I can hardly give it away.
I see these guys thinking late Westys are worth $35k. HUH? Who will buy one? I wouldn't be planning on flipping for that price. No bank will lend money on a 30-40 year old car.
Just buy and fix up because you love to do it. Love the process and the result.

our local credit union has a classic car loan program...not sure what it's all about though....
yea, I was surprised a bit when I went back to vwpoortex when doing my caddy last winter. you want to talk about DEAD...look at the MK1 scene.
10 years ago it was a huge deal. 12 years ago I bought out a vw shop full of NOS water cooled stuff.....I posted a NOS rabbit roof rack on poortex for 1K....it sold in 7 minutes. now, you can't give that stuff away....
I guess mommy and daddy are giving college kids an old prius to drive, and footing the entire bill. seems the mk1-mk2 guys were building cars to get thru school. glad I did what I did when I did it....I think if I cash out I'd never get back in...but all of this was never an investment for me.
that, and I think the market is just flooded now...not with vw's just classics in general. seems that any tatted up bearded wonder has a show and flips these things...and I think a lot of the younger crowd just isn't interested in getting dirty anymore, because few kids have dads that change their own oil...let alone build a car _________________

Wow, ain't it the truth. Most young people are totally clueless about how to put on the spare. And reading the owner's manual is not on their list.
So, get a flat? call somebody. They are paying more to get tires changed than I did for whole cars. Even counting for inflation.
My dad took me with when he looked at cars, and when he bought tires and out in the garage when he rotated the tires. And vulcanized patches on tubes.

Maybe the kids these days are just working on cars from the 90's and early 2000's instead. Those cars are really easy to work on. They tune themselves, parts are available for cheap at the auto parts store, and you can buy the car for next to nothing these days. They were also designed with failure parts, so diagnostics is typically always one of three answers. So you just "spray and pray". You would never see these kids on forums, because it isn't really needed. And you especially wouldn't see them on old VW forums because, duh.
These are classic cars now, and expensive, and you have to wait days for parts. When you're a kid and need something to get around with, this isn't it. And a 80's car also isn't it, the support for parts isn't there anymore. _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

I think it's more of the fact that the kids grab up & modify/drive cars that can be had cheap, once the cars achieve cult or collector status/price they're out of their price range. The kids will always build & tinker on the car that they got for free or cheap so that they can drive it. Why would they buy a bus for $8,000+ when they could buy a late 90s M3 for the same. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
