A VW Shop told me they can change the inner and outer rear torson bushings without removing the rear drums or the Diag arms. Is it possible? I don't see it. |

They are correct-just unbolt the spring plate and the torsion bushing cover. |

The Saco bushings are supposed to be good.
VW quit making the outer ones, but there are still inner VW ones around. I had a set of aftermarket black rubber outer ones and they were under size. |

Where did you get the tool to do that?
I typically do it with a jack and chain.
I've bought the tool that will do it from aircooled.net butt the way it works you need to have the body off the pan to access the proper hole. |

Some simple home-made tools for fun with torsion bars...
This tool allows easy and controlled release of the spring plate. It is composed of a length of 3/4" threaded rod, 2 nuts, 2 washers and 2 1/2" eye bolts.
Just pry the spring plate off of the step, then loosen the bottom nut.
Notice the spray paint "silhouette" of the diagonal arm. This allowed me to re-position the diagonal arm "close enough to play jazz" for my drive to the alignment shop.
This tool allows removal of a stuck spring plate from the rear torsion bar. It is composed of two short pieces of 2x2 bolted together. A suitable hole is drilled through the "split" so it can be clamped around the torsion bar.
The soft wood will grip the torsion bar without gaffing up the coating, and the spring plate is easily pried off.
Good luck, Mondshine |

What a great idea, Mondshine! Thank you.
I've gotta make one of these. Your idea is far safer than jacks, ratchet straps, chains, etc... _________________ Eric

One thing I forgot to mention is that the nut at the top of the threaded rod is drilled through and pinned to the threaded rod so that the top nut can't accidentally come off.
Surprises are no fun when playing with those spring plates.
Good luck, Mondshine |
