how are you patching the bottom part where the , i dunno how to describe it, the outer skin and inner skin kind of meet up? like below where the window glass is? I found a set of pretty good door (way better than the one son my bus, no bottom corner rot), but its gettign bad from the corner by the door handle to just before the bend goign down..you can kind of tell where the rot would be where the primer is in this pic
, and you can see where i started to clean it off ..some of it is still solid, but some of it came off with the grinder.
I could just put some hairy bondo on it "for now" and put some cheapy door seals on it, but sooner rather than later I'd like to do it up properly.
(or is this a question i should start a new thread on? cuz up here in the northeast and the maritimes every door ive seen has either got no bottom corner or no bottom below the glass? _________________ Tilda the Mustard Tigress 1973 Squareback (o'''^'''o)

Hello Yarkle,Been watching your build treads,
I have an rusted out parts bus that I cut pieces from to patch onto Ethel, the door corner patch I had to revisit because the track for the weather strip was rusted out,I cut a piece from higher up off the parts door and welded it to Ethel.the bottom was pretty good under the skin so I cut a piece and just bent it 90 degrees to fit,[I may have to revisit that also,I welded the skin to the enforcement bar inside the door, which pulled the skin in a little,so it,s either unweld it or use a coat of filler about 3/16 thick.
For the bottom inside I again cut pieces from the old door and patched them in.
Have you gotten dug out from under from that snow yet,I have a couple of feet in the driveway, another coffee before I tackle that. _________________ https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=620186

Yeah, i dug it all out but we are supposed to get another foot over the next three days...
on my 73 bus (well, the new doors, the old doors are shot), the rust is pretty much in the area i highlighted in yellow (on a pic i found in the gallery)..So i guess id have to do something similar and cut out the outer skin and then the inner skin and patch it? it looks like schofileds has a inner piece, and maybe i can just get a piece of sheet metal bent for the outer?
On my sons 69, the yellow area really isnt bad, but there are BIG holes where the blue is. My concern was i wouldnt be able to get the shape right with a patch and the door wouldnt close,
(i havent practiced my metalworking skills in ages and i kind of have to re-learn how to weld this spring)
What really sucks is i have a "VW transporter restoration manual" or something like that from the UK, and it shows a patch panel thats basically the entire inner section from the bottom to about the slide part. But apparently htey dotn make it any more.
EDIT: Ok, rereadign this, you basically cut a piece off of the purple to fix the yellow? I think i might be able to do that with the crappy doors i have! _________________ Tilda the Mustard Tigress 1973 Squareback (o'''^'''o)

It may be worth your time to check the classifieds, maybe get a moving company or a general freight company to ship it,could save a lot of work and maybe a dollar or two. _________________ https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=620186

the yellow ones i got are pretty solid, except in that one place on each side.
Even the ones ive seen in the classifieds either wont ship or have some sort of issue to them.
Back when i just had the thing I saw several doors at the local swap meet, since weve gotten into buses havent seen any! _________________ Tilda the Mustard Tigress 1973 Squareback (o'''^'''o)

Started to dig into the driver's side. There is a little rust that had been previously repaired, with spray foam, filler and fiberglass and a few patchs, looks like a new rocker panel was installed and then filled with spray foam.I have some cutting to do.

Removed some of the patchs that were hiding the real rust, here is the front left jack point.I have dug out the foam from the rocker panel, there is a fairly new rocker applied over the old one and the inner rocker was replaced with foam.
The red/pink metal is a patch welded to the inside,it was was also along the bottom attaching the floor to the bulkhead the top hat was made with foam and covered over,

I think that's the cleanest frame I've ever seen on a bus from this area. _________________ 1985 Diesel Jetta Coupe (temporarily retired at

Fitting the dog leg. This is the cip1 best dogleg,it does not fit as good as the one that I put on the right side,Quality seems to have drop between the time that I got the first one and the second one, first one came in a box from the manufacture and the second one in a shipping box from cip1,makes one think.
Anyhow this is what it is.
Here is the fit,it has to raise up about 1 inch, but it is see-sawing where it contacts the floor at the rear of the step,so I put the step flange above the floor and cut it to allow it to raise up.Installed the door, the front of the dogleg is too low,so I plan on twisting it to bring the front up and bring the rear down where it contacts the floor.I have no idea on how I can get it to twist.

Trying to fit it all together, welded in a patch on the frame behind the support and got the section of tophat welded in.I clamped the inner rocker to the tophats to determine how long the tophat should be and also the position of the jack point.

Welded in the inner and middle rocker, patched the splash panel, repaired the B pillar and welded in the dog leg.The B-pillar twisted when I was welding,it is not yet welded on the back side I am hoping to fix it when doing the lower panel and the inside of the pillar,I have not welded the bottom of the dogleg to the pillar yet so I have some adjustment there.
Now Its on to the C-pillar and the rear arch I'll get that patched and fitted as I do the lower panel and outside rocker.

Repaired the wheel well and the C-pillar,checking the fit of the lower panel,it is a wee bit short, about 1/4 inch short, the profile for the body line is off,it is too deep and not long enough,I see 3 way to fix it,cut the panel and weld in a piece, reprofile the bodyline on the patch panel or split the difference and fill the gaps with seam sealer.

Thanks Pinetops,
Playing connect the dots today,I fastened a piece of aluminum to the back side to held stiffen it a bit,I was going to use it as a backer for the butt joint ,but I find if I have any space between the backer and the panel I get more blow thru.I welded the outer rocker onto the patch before installing the it.
