re: Bay window '76

I have been wondering if it's unsafe for my wife and I to sleep on the top bunk and have the kids down below? I keep thinking that it could somehow come crashing down on them. The top bunk is however much larger and I don't necessarily want the kids climbing up and down all the time - so it seems like it was designed to be that way?

Does anyone know the weight load for the top or, more importantly, how I might check it's 40 year old integrity?

Thanks.

It's pretty damned sturdy. I've slept up there with another adult many times, and never had any feeling of flimsiness. There is a beefy steel crossbar holding up the front edge.

Adults up top and kids below is the way to go, I think.

Have the heavier of you two climb on up and bounce around while the other watches for flex. Really though, once you're up there, your weight is spread out over a large (no insult/pun intended!) footprint.

For us, we divide and conquer - I'm upstairs with our near 5yr old while my wife is downstairs with our 2.5 yr old. If they were together, bed time would be an extended affair...

Are we discussing a Westfalia?, or other brand of camper?

Sure. There's a steel beam across the opening that the bed flips over, between the hinges for the upper bed. The upstairs is much roomier than below since there's no cabinets up there. It's wider and longer. I guess it does depend on how much weight we're talking I suppose.

It's very sturdy up there, I've never had a worry. Source: Plenty of years of "activities" in the upper bed.

How fat are you and the good lady friend?
I always sleep up top, more room up there.
It's pretty sturdy. I've tested it, vigorously at times....drunk too.

Had a 79 westy when the kids were small. The wife and I slept in the top bunk with the kids down below all the time. it was never a problem with both of us sleeping up there, in fact my wife preferred it! More room up top and with everyone in bed and all the doors locked she felt the kids were more secure in the bottom bunk. BTW at the time I was pushing 275 lbs. I'm 6'3". I say go for it!

Its plenty sturdy up there. You'll also love the extra width and not smacking your head on the top cabinet!😉

As long as Sodbuster's wife weighs more than 20 lbs you should be good!

HA! She's a small blond as I like to say but not that small. Happyfolk I also should mention my '79 was exactly the same model as the one in your signature. I still miss that bus. Crying or Very sad

So "your kind" are the reasoning I scrub the shit out of my bus interior...

The lady and I were hesitate at the beginning with us both up there, but again, it seems pretty darn sturdy.

Ya damn nasties...

You and the wife might give it a go without the kids below. At least you won't have to worry about " dropping in" on them ! Laughing

But if you're not careful, you might need to break out the child's cot for the 3rd kid...
