Something new I think, when crossing from the US they will ask you if you have a concealed carry permit, if you answer "yes" it's a mandatory search of the vehicle . After them tearing through my van , I ask why the search, and after some reluctance the officer said it was mandatory because of the answer "Yes".
Moderator edit: "Boarder" in title changed to "border". |

Sorry to be picky, but there is no CanAm boarder.
You may be referring to the CanUS Border, or Canada USA Border. _________________ '88 VW Westfalia

We were at the Westies at the Glen event 3 days before so that solved that problem. They did look into the vents.

We just spent the summer driving to Alaska through Canada. We were never asked anything about a Conceal Carry Permit, although in the 4 times we crossed into Canada we were asked what we had for personal protection. The first time we crossed, the border agent was curious as to what kind of gun I had on the front of my truck because she had never seen one like it. It was my High Lift Jack.
Of course we were smart enough to know that you don't take guns into either Canada or Mexico unless you have special permits that are available for hunting. |

We were asked if we had any weapons when crossing this summer. Eventhough our answer was no, our Westy was still carefully searched by the border patrol. They carefully asked my daughter and myself various details about our trip separately on each side of the vehicle, then they conferenced in the back of the vehicle to compare our stories. I felt a little like we were being profiled because of the Westy. _________________ 1988 Westfalia automatic Subaru OBD1

I/we cross the border 25 or more times a year in the Westy. The Westy isn't a problem for the US or Canadian CBP.
Twice in forty years I've been searched because the machine flags every 10x or 100x vehicles - its not an issue for me. I'm perfectly happy to help both either team carry out a difficult and very necessary job. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

This is not new. We don't need yahoos running around with guns. We have laws. As for your superior doctors you have the best that money can buy. That's why so many Canadian specialists end up in the US and we have a shortage. Thanks. You also come up here to recruit Canadian trained nurses. Thanks.Your healthcare outcomes are not better than ours or a number of other countries, but you pay big $$ for it. |

You can cross with long guns but there's a fee involved. I hunt black bears but stay in the U.S. because of the hassle. My family came to Canada around 1640, moved here around 1860. There's a lot to admire about Canada. _________________ ________________________________________

Ive never been asked about guns at the Canafian border but have had my van disassembled after they noticed one of my passengers smoking hand rolls. Hours of BS for nothing. This is back when most of the good bud was north of the border and psychedelics were found on every corner of Vancouver. Mid 90s.
I understand their concern. ya know? _________________ Support Small Business.

Can I ask specifically, are you saying the Canadian border agent specifically asked you if "Sir, do you have a concealed carry permit?". That is something I've never heard before. Certainly asking if you "have any weapons/firearms in your vehicle?", but asking specifically if you have a CCW is a new one. Why would they ask every single person crossing if they had a CCW. Anyway, just wanted the specifics. _________________ '87 Westy 1.8T Conversion, Orignal Owner, European Delivery @ Westfalia factory in Weidenbrueck.

I was told, handguns had to be left at the boarder and could be picked up on the way out and long guns could enter. |

Yes, he asked "Sir, do you have a concealed carry permit?" and " Do you have any weapons/firearms in your vehicle?", I over heard him on the intercom /phone saying he had a mandatory search and asked me to pull into the search area, than they asked myself and wife to exit the vechical and to sit on the bench, there were several other cars there but no one was sitting outside their vehicles. I have no gun stickers or anything that would warrant the questions, He even asked where I was born, this was on the way in, he asked where I had been, and I told him we were camping at the auto races at Watkins Glen, the van was loaded with camping gear.
I didn't mind it but it struck me as interesting, Someone who is honest gets searched , but the person who lies about it gets to continue on. |

18 inch (457.2mm for Canadian audience) double barrel coach 12 gauge is allowed, short enough to swing, buckshot in one barrel , slug in the other. Enough to handle the poor disgruntled "refugees" with knives. If they ask tell them you plan on doing some recreational shooting while on vacation.
