So i got a watts 009 1/2 " backflow preventer on my home boiler system. It has begun to drip ever so slightly from the vent port on the bottom. Im curious if this would be a simple pop it open and clean that area? Possibly some sediment is in there. What I dont want to do is pop it open and then eff it up and need a whole new assembly. They are not too terribly expensive but installing them looks like a challenge. I guess what I am asking is if I do need to install a new one, do I drain the entire boiler system and just unscrew the assembly from the lines and thread a new one in place? I notice online the repair kits are available but a new unit is not all that much more money. What is some sage advice from an experienced plumber?
Thanks in advance

yes.... to add to that I wood get the kit or the new unit, before opening it and blowing out the debris... but how did the debris get in the seal to cause a leek??? or is it just dead....probably just dead.thus the need for the new one.( I would get the new one not the kit. when you get the kit there is a reason why it dies and that reason isant in the kit..... and the new valve may be a updated version with better parts...or not. |

I had a bunch of work done several months ago like fill valve, expansion tank etc... so maybe some sediment got through there? It started leaking soon after all the work was done. I dont mind going for a new unit but curious a out the procedure |

I dont know Im not a plumber, but I do everything.....get the new unit if all it needs is releaving pressure and blowing out crap then return the new part or keep till it's needed. if you releave it and dont have it... it will not shut off. possiably they raised the pressure....or it's just time. water is very corrosive to valves for some stupid reason. Ive reserfaced many brass seat valves and they just dont last. I always replace with the best I can. I always install ball valves for shut off valves, they seal and dont get stuck so eazy. I did tear appart a blow off valve last year it was a bitch. but I didnt want to reuse, it just get it appart.it didnt work like I thought. |
