I got the wheels from Tirerack.com. The brand is TR Motorsports. The model is the C1. Keep in mind though, I am on a Miata lug pattern. They dont offer the standard wide 5 in these. Only 4x100 and 5x114.3. _________________ 1970 Bug Shell - the rest of it, well see for yourself...

Getting closer and closer to driving it again! I finished up the engine last night. There is a good chance it will be up and running this weekend.

This engine looks like it weighs more than the car. Is this a heavy engine? _________________ Mike

Haha it is quite large for a 4 cylinder. Fully dressed with the blower, its about 325 lbs. With the trans connected, right at 400 lbs. _________________ 1970 Bug Shell - the rest of it, well see for yourself...

Well I was going to wait a little bit longer before this update but progress has been going good. So its time. After my last long update, you guys saw that I had the Bug up and running and I was tuning it. Well after I got it all tuned, it was time to take it to the track. So as soon as the next Auto-x event popped up, I signed up.
At this event, I ran in the Ultimate Street Car class. Its a class where any car can run without limitations. By the end of the day, I had no idea how I was doing. It was my first race in the Bug and I just wanted to get a feel for the car. Well I ended up taking home 1st in class as well as a special award for being the most unique car there.
After that race, I thought everything was good until I gave the Bug a good look over. Turns out I bent both from lower arms. The sway bar was stronger then the arms. So I had to make 2 new, better, front arms before my next race which was in 1 month. This version of the arms were made out of Chromoly and had a way better design then the first set.
I got that all done in time for the next race. Well round one was going good and I was getting more comfortable with the car. At the start of round # 2, I heard the engine starting to make some noise. About half way through the round, it started knocking. Threw it on the trailer and called it a day. Long story short, the person who did all the machine work on my head, did not do everything I asked. So the valve springs were actually rubbing the side of the head. They rubbed so bad, it sent metal through the entire engine causing a bearing to spin. It actually ended up wasting most of the engine. We will get to that in the next post.

That video was awesome! I would love to see it on a long strip going through all of the gears. _________________ Mike

I would love to go through all the gears too! If I did my math right, and if it has enough power (which it should), top speed should be around 177mph. Now if I could only find a spot to try it out....
If you can find my Youtube channel, I have a lot more videos of the Bug in action. _________________ 1970 Bug Shell - the rest of it, well see for yourself...

Looks like I am going racing this weekend. First time with the new engine. I got the Bug 100% painted and ready to go. I have only put about 40 miles on the new setup and I wish I had more time (and better weather) to be able to put more miles on it before the race. But it is what it is and I am hoping nothing falls off or breaks. I will get some videos and pictures up after the weekend.

Awesome!
Too bad about the first engine. That would have broken me. |

Race from yesterday. I find it funny that there is another white Bug that drives by while I am doing a lap.

And a bad way to end the day. Was planning on driving it home but guess not. _________________ 1970 Bug Shell - the rest of it, well see for yourself...
