hey everyone,
i always seem to have boxes of bits and pieces around the garage and in the basement, some have stuff i save to keep me on the rd, others have parts i know i could sell or trade for parts i need, but there are some boxes that are just STUFF!!
what do you all think about a section in the classifieds for FREE stuff, i just can't throw any vw bits away, i always think there is someone out there who needs them! |

Just post them in the normal bay section with a price of free.
I have done this numerous times. |
that is what i was thinking, but when i searched "free" you get all kinds of "rust free" ads
i thought it would be nice to have a spot where you just browse free stuff. |

Free is the price so that is different.
There is not that much free stuff anyway...
I don't think I've ever "sold" anything that was free, although it's usually stuff that needs to be thrown away but I don't want to do that just in case.
I believe I have always ended up throwing it away.
That remind me I have at least one ad listed for free right now. Time to throw it away. _________________ How to Post Photos

I agree with Everett in using free in the price, and it will keep the clutter of too many sections down. _________________ John

Inputting 'free' into one or both of the price lines in the search function of the classifieds is apparently disregarded by the search algorithm, perhaps due to not being a numerical entry. Just FYI. I doubt there's enough such ads to need a section, but it would be nice to be able to find them easier. Entering varients of 0.00 or 00000 doesn't seem to work either. Oh, that's partly why-
"Classifieds - Search or Sort on Price
Searching or sorting on price will return only those ads with valid prices, excluding all "Make Offer" or other sorts of non-numeric prices.
This will result in less ads returned from your search."
Understandable to have it be that way, though I wonder how it handles mixed prices where there are valid number with modifiers like 'EUR' and 'OBO' or similar. Does the search support exclusions at all? Then one could exclude 'rust free', 'feel free' and the like, in order to cut down the number of returned ads. Oh, I'd bet the google search does! Might be tricky limiting it to the classifieds though, requires some experimentation! Later though, energy getting low. Hope I'm not asking too many dumb questions or anything. Anyhow, have a good one and thanks for reading! _________________ Two Bugs-

The search by price excludes anything without a number so anything marked "free" would not appear at all.
Any text is stripped out. OBO, for example
This price search is not perfect either so it messes up when people put stuff like
$3000/$3500 because of vehicle options. _________________ How to Post Photos

I would think that if you typed in $1 that it would be understood that the item is free, at least that could become the code for free. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? This would be a good idea but unfortunately due to craigslist and often here too, $1 means the person did not want put a price and wants offers.
Off the original topic, but this is what happen when you enforce a price rather than "Offers" or other text-type pricing. People put $1 instead.
This is not to say "Offers" is usually a bad idea and that I am not against it on the site, just not enough to ban the practice here or enforce a numerical price. _________________ How to Post Photos
