Help, my 1985 Vanagon Westy has a noise that emanates from the speedometer when the outside temperature is cool/cold say below 70degrees F. I have replaced the speedometer cable thinking that was the issue but no luck. Is lubrication the answer and if so what do i lube and with what type of lubricant? Thanks.

When my speedometer was making noises it was actually the odometer issue and the cog spinning on the shaft. Once I fixed that the noises were gone. Ymmv

The noise is more of a screetch that is pretty loud.

My toyota truck did this and the screach was intense. It was also the odometer and not the cable as I had assumed.

Mine makes a rattling-drill sound but only if near freezing. In this case it's the cable... I *think* (and then get a pounding headache).

It's even jumpier than usual when it happens, too.
