This is insanity!!! We are all insane! What a positive attitude. Absolutely no fear whatsoever. The back of your bug is claimed by the evil one in the most despicable and unfair circumstances and what do you do? You give the whole situation the big middle finger and just cut this huge chunk off with a sawzall. And its then that you say to yourself its a good time to learn how to weld? Bravo! I absolutely love this thread. I just read the whole thing front to back and have to say that this is how life is to be lived. Wide open straight forward never look back go for it. Walk on the water with total confidence Beetlenut you have this whole thing nailed!!!! Bugs are such cool things to meditate on aren't they.

Jeeze, I just now saw the two above posts! Life getting in the way of my hobby, WTF?! Thanks for the kind words. Had to move the car to another garage, so two steps backward before I could move forward. The good news is, it's where I live, so now I can work on it a few hours after work a few days a week. That adds up.

So some work finally getting done. Finished battery and electric fuel pump and filter up front, plumed the brake reservoir lines, and ran the fuel lines. Reconditioned my gas tank, and it will go back in as soon as I finish hooking up the electrical connections for my fuel pump cut off relay.

Got the rear disk brake from TopLine installed. Very nice complete kit with needed spacers to center the rotor in the caliber. Left side bolted right up, but the right side required one axle spacer behind the rotor due to worn components, most likely one of the three stub axle spacers. Also rebuilt my E-brake handle while I was installing the new E-brake cables.

Got my rebuilt 1700 long block back from Gary Leblanc. Test fitting reveals an issue with the right side engine bay. I knew I had an issue with this area of the car, as that's where the graft went on from another car, but I needed to wait until I got my long block back to see where to begin modifications on how to make room in there. I'll have to bolt on the rear deck lid, and see how that fits, to figure out how to proceed.

Very Inspiring! I have a 73 Super that's been out of action for the last 8 years, or so, due to a wrecked front driver's side fender and quarter panel. Time, money, and motivation wax and wane; so getting it back on the road hasn't been easy! I did a total off-body resto in 2000 when I bought it, and rebuilt the engine in 2004. Rust never sleeps, though! Now I've got rust in typical areas, along with the repair needed. Unfortunately, some of the rust is around the body and pan seal, so I'll have to separate them to do this right--arg! Anyway, your thread is great motivation for someone like me! Looking forward to seeing the finished product!

Man those wheels are wiiiiiiiiide! Looking good.

I love the bright colors detailing the suspension work. Bring some mirrors to the local cruise and slide 'em under when you park. Cool

Thanks, I feel your pain! I'm hoping with the prep, primers, and top coats I used, I won't have rust issues down the road. I looking forward to seeing it too! Wink Have to wait until the Spring though for that, as it's now dropping below freezing at night, so Winter is at the door.

Yes, but they fit and clear the suspension. I figured when you look under the car it's already in the shadows, so if everything is black, you can't make out much of anything. As long as the paints keep the rust at bay, I'll be happy.

Why yes I am!
Tomorrow is going to be a nice day. Nice enough for a ride to South County with your trailer! Wink

Well OK an update, it's been a waiting game getting parts back from the powder-coater and various vendors in order to finish my motor. Happily, I'm almost ready to put the motor back in and fire it off for the first time. I also have to plumb the fuel and brake systems. Managed to get some rear tires on the rims and get my rear sway bar back on too. Also finishing up installing new window felt tracks and scrapers and seals. I finally managed to find my fuel cut-off relay for my electric fuel pump and get that installed and wired up. I lost it (a brand new part) for about three months, until I found it while looking for something else.

Incremental progress. Got my fenders and deck lids back from the painter. Getting the tail light and engine wiring sorted before I put in the new firewall insulation, then the motor goes back in.

Well the plan was this Summer which slipped to this Fall. Now I'm questioning if I want to rush to get it done only to register and insure it for a month or two. Life just keeps getting in the way of my hobby dam it! And of course at this point there's a million little things to deal with to get it finished. Probably will be Spring so I can get it done the way I want to get it done. I'll at least get the motor in and started and go through the break in phase.

Well, I did get the engine in and through the break-in phase. Still have a lot of wet sanding and polishing to do on the fenders and deck lids. Very happy with my engine, and looking forward to getting the first 1k miles on it. Hoping the suspension settles down some, as the gap between the fenders and tires is larger than I like. I'll see how it looks after the first 1000 mile phase.

Awesome!!! It sounds great! The adrenaline has got to be flowing now Very Happy

I've got those struts and it looks to me like you can drop it some more. Did you flip your tie rods? Mine were flipped and it let's you drop those struts to limbo under the lowest. Down another smaller click in the rear and good to go.

Or... A full tank of gas will settle the front an inch it seems.

Those rims are sweeeeet. Cool

Thanks, the motor sounds strong. I put the struts to a 2 1/2 inch drop, which is the lowest you are supposed to be able to go on a 74. I didn't flip my tie rods since I didn't go lower. I only have about 2 gallons of gas in the tank too. I also have to carry a low profile jack up front, so that will add some weight. Any pics of those flipped tie rods?

I found these. I didn't do the work though. PO of the PO did the suspension. She was passed around in a basket a couple times before coming home to me.
