So what should I look for? It's an IRS sand rail making some pretty good power (2276 and boost might be coming)
Since I need axles anyway, might as well get some strong ones. What are they and where can I get them? |

Get the Saw-A-Way axles and convert to Bus CVs. _________________ Glenn

I second the SAW axles. To swap you need to replace the hubs on the trans, and the stub axles. Not overly difficult. Conversion parts are readily avalible.
At what HP/TQ levels would you suggest switching to Bus CVs, and then 930 CV's? _________________ Restorer of Porsche Speedster 80486 |

Sway-A-Way is an aftermarket company. Buy the axles from them. To convert to the larget Type 2 (aka Bus) CV joints you'll need to replace the flanges on the tranny with VW Type 181(aka Thing) flanges and the stub axles to Porsche 944 stub axles.
That way the complete axles will be alot stronger. _________________ Glenn

I wouldn't change them unles you have a "built" tranny. Right now the stock IRS CVs will act like a fuse to protect your gearbox.
The CVs will usually break before your gearbox does and those are a lot easier to change.
If you go the bus CV route there are several places you can get conversion stubs and drive flanges to adapt bus CVs to your application without trying to find Thing or Porsche parts. Typically those conversion parts can be had for under $200 + the cost of CVs and axles.
Then you can use either IRS T-1 CV in a pinch or the T-2 CV joints.
I can post a picture of the converson stub Monday if you wish. _________________ Gary

well, the tranny is pretty well built. it's seen some 5 and 6 second 1/8th mile passes without a groan.
I found the sway-a-way axles on CB site, now where to look for the transmission flanges and axle stubs? |

I just used stock type 2 irs drive flanges on my transaxle, as well as stock type 2 cv joints, inner and outer. I modded the stock axle shafts to accept them, because the snap ring groove would have been in the wrong place. i bought the conversion stub axles from the Samba classifieds. |

That sounds ... well ... very impressive. Could you provide more details on your drivetrain setup? _________________ Get ready for the injection

The stock T-2 drive flanges Noof spoke of will work for your inner CVs and this is the conversion stub I use on the outers.
Much easier than trying to find Thing stubs.
These conversion stubs will accept both T-1 and T-2 CVs.
The axles that CB sells have a longer spline so there isn't any issues of the bus CV fitting or bottoming out when you jump your rail. _________________ Gary

so is the bus CV a stronger CV then stock beetle joints? I saw the sway away axles, but don't know enough of the CV joints to pick a good one |

Stronger and larger both.
Ideal setup IMHO is T-2 or conversion drive flanges on your tranny, conversion stub axles and S/A drive axles. _________________ Gary
