Yeah, I was a bit shocked to learn of VW's short-sightedness.
As in; the T3 could have looked like the Toyota van:
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Or that the Subaru engine so many people love was supposed to be our power plant (or so I've been led to believe).
Could you imagine the impact one of us could have had in a production meeting at VW in the late 70's/ early 80's?
Talk about getting the van of your dreams...............

This is when just installed in late 2010 - note the unwrapped loom wires around the back of the engine bay. It has since done more than 25,000 virtually trouble-free miles.

I have a soft spot for VAG 15 degree installs that fit under the lid. This pic is very old, but the project kinda got sidelined by the acquisition of our vastly superior Weekender. I'm going to be welding up an all steel intake manifold later this week, so I'm hoping to have it running shortly. Our daughter just commandeered the Audi, so we need a third daily, asap.

Yet, mine is still working quite nicely and it is 27 years old. I do take it on long trips. By no means am I an "over maintainer". (1990 2WD Doka imported from Sweden.)

What's the red thing dangling on the passenger side by the AC port?

I'm not sure. This photo was taken during the engine install. I suspect it's a temporary handle to turn on/off a ball valve at one of the coolant lines. Just a guess. I can tell you it's not there now. Maybe someone who knows their stuff (unlike myself) could chime in?

It looks like it's just a production tag on an AC service port, perhaps left as a reminder to fill the compressor with oil prior to pulling a vacuum and charging.

Is that the Burley wrap around coolant pipe I see on your swap? If so, are you using both the upper and lower pipes?

Well I was wrong it's just a led worklight hanging down. Sorry, nothing too exciting.

ABA with a supercharger. It has exhibited none of the above qualities yet, but I'm optimistic. Very Happy

I would have replied sooner but couldn't give you an answer off the top of my head.
I didn't do the swap and not too familiar with the cooling system on subaru engines but I believe so. Hope these help.
